Hi, I wonder if anyone can offer me any advice. I had my baby on the 15th and as he had group b strep he had five days of antibiotics finishing last Monday. Hospital was happy he was over everything and sent us home. The only problem is he has had a very painful stomach and diahrea since. It got worse the longer he was on the antibiotics and hasn't got better since. He has a lot of pain in between feeds and bowl movements and cries, arches his back, pulls his legs up etc. His poo is the normal breastfed baby color but mucousy and there is also a green /blue liquid that comes out with it. I am worried he should be getting better now if it was the antibiotics causing it? Could it be an allergy to something I'm eating? I had sushi with soya sauce the other night and he seemed a lot worse. I took him to the doctors on Friday and he just said it's the antibiotics.. Sorry for the rambling post I'm very sleep deprived.

If you get no joy from the GP I'd speak to a breastfeeding advisor, do you have any groups near you?

If it is the antibiotics, you can try some probiotics. I used to break open the capsule, lick my (clean) finger and dip it in the powder, then let the baby suck it off. Helped both of mine after a course of antibiotics.
Also, be very aware of the symptoms of oral / nipple thrush for both of you. It's very common after antibiotics and prompt treatment is essential to avoid long-term infection.

Can you give probiotics to such a small baby? Where did you get them from?

Sorry - meant to say I bought them in my local health food shop but I have seen them around - not sure if Boots / Tesco etc. sell them.

Thanks, just ordered some. Fingers crossed it makes a difference!

@celeryeater I hope it helps too. It certainly won't do any harm.

The gut flora can be damaged after diarrhoea which means that the enzyme lactase can be depleted and cause a temporary lactose intolerance which means digesting milk is tricky. You can maybe ask your HV about using lactose free milk for a few days and reintroducing the normal stuff gradually- might help?

domestichiefofstaff · 27/08/2018 18:27

If you are bf, carry on as normal but do ask your HV if you are concerned- it will all get back to normal once his little tummy has recovered

Hi Op,
Breastmilk has natural probiotics I wouldn't introduce anything else personally at this stage in case of another reaction. There is no proven evidence that probiotics work apart from ones that are found naturally in food of course. I think the tummy just needs to settle down and may take a little time to do that. Breastmilk is fantastic and will help develop the natural good flora again x

Yes I am breastfeeding but will definitely be mentioning it to the midwife and health visitor when they come tomorrow.

I'm this case I would not seek health advice from MN - see a qualified medical professional asap. And I mean ASAP! I don't understand why you've decided to DIY and order treatment online, see a doctor

celeryeater · 27/08/2018 19:20

I have seen a doctor Friday! He said it was the antibiotics but if there was no improvement by tomorrow (Tuesday) then call up and they will take a poo sample incase it could be parasites or something but he said it was unlikely. He said 'we know it's because of the antibiotics'. Baby isn't dehydrated and is weeing lots too.

You can buy probiotics specifically for babies which you put on your nipple. Luckily breastmilk is a fabulous probiotic in itself.
With so many things going on it's hard to know the cause, it could be so many things. At this point I'd say there is certainly no harm in you cutting out dairy and soya to see if it helps improve things. CMPA is very common in young infants (soya protein is very similar to CMP) and is the most likely allergy (if any) at this stage.

SnuggyBuggy · 27/08/2018 19:47

The only other thing I can think is that your baby is getting too much foremilk which can make them gassy and have greenish poop. A breastfeeding specialist could potentially advise on this.

My bf dd has had absolutely loads of antibiotics in her short life due to her ears, she always takes about two weeks to get back to normal after antibiotics, the worst one was clarithromycin, it really upset her tummy for ages after. I think your baby will start settling down this week.
