Baby food allergies

DS swelled up and went red after eating his first egg. He’s been referred to a hospital allergy clinic - any idea what I can expect to happen?

Also the appointment is 2 months away and I’ve been advised not to introduce any other allergens in the meantime in case he has a bad reaction. But I’ve heard its safer to introduce allergens asap so I’m worried about missing the window to safely introduce allergens?

I'd heed the advice given to you by trained professionals.

What age is the child? Surely anything has the potential to be an allergen, did they state specifically what to avoid?

BigBlueBubble · 27/08/2018 09:54

6m, will be 8m when we go to hospital. They said avoid the main allergens like fish and nuts etc, as if a child has one allergy he may have more. And stick to foods he’s already tried that you know are safe. So he has a very restricted diet because he hasn’t tried many foods yet.

Have they just asked you to avoid giving known allergens or all new foods OP?

What’s he tried already?

BigBlueBubble · 27/08/2018 13:20

He’s had various fruit and veg, meat such as chicken/pork/beef, rice porridge and milk/yogurt. None of the other main allergens ie fish soy wheat nuts. They said as he already has one allergy it would be wise to check him for the other common allergens. Instead of playing Russian roulette by feeding them to him to see what happens.

I wouldn’t worry too much, I know lots of babies that age who are offer a much narrower variety of foods OP and the meat and dairy will be providing fat, protein and vitamins and minerals.

Really sorry but I can’t answer your question on whether to introduce the allergens earlier. The only research I’ve seen which recommended introducing them earlier was sponsored by Nestle and obviously they have a vested interest in getting you to buy their products. They don’t make nuch money out of you if you delay Weaning and give the baby what you are eating. There may be newer research though which may be more independent which backs up this theory, but I personally haven’t seen any.

Ok, I've had this with dc2, although we had to wait until 10mo to be seen after a reaction at 6mo Hmm

Yes, the current research is strongly indicating that allergenic foods should be introduced as early as possible where there's an indication. I was told this by the allergy specialist and also a paediatrician in a&e who seemed to know her stuff. But I'd wait until your appointment tbh and go from there. I started weaning dc2 at 5mo so she'd had a good range of food by the time the reaction to egg happened at 6mo. I didn't give her peanut butter until after she'd been seen though.

My advice is buy a bottle of Piriton for peace of mind. The dosage is the same as for a 1yr old. A&E doctor told me it was fine to give under 1 year if necessary.

Dc2 is almost 4; we did the egg ladder and now she's grown out of it and eggs are her fav Smile
