So how do you become a BF mentor /helper / whatever

I have BF all three of mine and never really considered anything else. I did have problems (pain, cracks and all that), but not as much as some people. Having spoken to people on here who are having problems with BF, and wanting to support BF in general, how do you become a mentor (I would say counsellor but I think that may be more training than I could commit to)

I have been looking into it. The NCT and LLL both do extensive courses to become a counsellor. Not sure about LLL but NCTs is an accredited academic course and is a big committment. I personally can't give it the time required but it looks a great course.

The BFN and ABM do shorter courses, some of just 6 wks or so as 'tasters' for the longer courses which qualify you to work on their helplines or as peer supporters.

Look on their websites for more info.

I've always thought there should be a bf buddying network, where experienced mothers go out 'in public' with new mothers to give them confidence and advise them locally on places that are bf friendly!

I'd certainly be up for that! Has it ever been done?

Maybe have a word with your local Health Visitor. Mine have just run a course for BF supporters (I was going to do it but it clashed with something else). It wasn't a long course so I don't think you would have to commit too much time. I would like to do it if they run another..

There's a BF buddy system in the scottish borders where an experienced mum will buddy up with a first timer. my sister has just been asked by her midwife to be a buddy, I don't know the ins and outs of it but she posted a thread last week I think.

I'm Liath's dsis - I live in the borders, but it's actually the Northumberland side that I'm doing the training with. it is run, and funded, through sure start. My first session is tomorrow night - I can tell you more then, if you're interested!

Thanks lyndyloo, am looking into that now..
Skatergirl, funny for some reason I didn't associate asking health visitor previously, I don't know why, I think it's because sometimes they have appeared a little blank with some things

Thank you all for your help with this - I am going to look into the sure start scheme and also look into NCT and LLL.
