Advice on going dairy free

Dustywillow · 21/08/2018 09:29

I posted a while ago about my sicky dd and got some good advice but as things are getting worse. I would like to go dairy free to see if it would improve her symptoms.

The thing is what sort of milk , butter or bread should I go for? I was looking on tescos and there is so many different types ? Which ones taste better

As I love my cup of tea toast and biscuits.

Any tips on which brands taste better ?

Thanks

Oalty barista oat milk is really nice in tea and coffee. I like coconut based milk as well, but that suits coffee better, it’s nice in muesli too.

Butter - Pure, Flora's dairy free one, etc all taste similar I think - like margarine.

Bread - a lot of the normal bread is dairy free, but check the ingredients

Biscuits - Oreos are dairy free

Tea - as above, Oatly Barista is supposed to be the best in tea (and Oatly make a nice creme freche) but i gave up and just have black tea now. Earl Grey is nice black or with lemon.

It's really personal op, you just have to try the different brands and see what you like. There are so many different types of soy/ nut milk substitutes. For butter I prefer flora freedom but again it's a personal taste

Also (fun fact!) most garlic bread is dairy free, made with oil. So don't always rush to buy expensive free from brands, it may be that some of your usual shop is dairy free anyway

Everyone you ask will have a different response but I prefer oat milk for hot drinks (M&S or Oatly Barista are my fav) I don't use any spreads but do like almond butter and spreadable "fake cheese". Violife cheese slices are nice, a bit like cheap mild cheddar, Oreos, choc chip hob nobs, supermarket own brand mint thins (but not after eights). You will just find your way and it will get easier.

Also be wary of soya products as the protein can be similar to CMP and "may contain milk" products are fine unless your little one is particularly sensitive.

Vitalite dairy free spread is great on toast. Stork or shops own brand for baking.
Violife cheese is the best and least weird smelling out there.
There are icecreams which are dairy free. Sainsburys do a choc one which is delish.
Dark chocolate is usually fine to eat.
Waitrose sell a pre sliced tiger bread by the baking brothers I think which is dairy free. Its on the shelves where the normal breads are no at the deli.
Also co op doughnuts are dairy free. They do a custard one and a jam one.
ED is dairy free due to allergic reaction so its been interesting trying to find replacements. She uses Sainsburys own uht almond milk, but I'll get some of the oatly barrista one and see if she likes it better. She can't bear coconut anymore due to how many dairy free products have it in.

Another vote for oatly barista here. Plus flora pure. Tesco had a good range of dairy free cheeses. There's a couple of Facebook groups - dairy free baby and me, cmpa for weaning that list the dairy free foods available.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! Will definitely be trying them out. I understand will need to try and few to see which ones I like .

Can’t believe there is so many different substitutes out there! Hopefully I can manage it and it makes a difference to my Dd

Thanks again

One thing I would add is around 5 mo when they're trying to sit up more they can get a bit more sicky. My ds's silent reflux got much worse then. It improved when he began to stand and crawl.

anotherangel2 · 22/08/2018 20:45

Bourbons, party rings and angel cake are usually dairy free.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 26/08/2018 08:10

We use Pure or Vitalite here. I now drink my tea black as I didn’t like any of the substitutes. Lots of breads are naturally DF. The basic biscuits are usually DF like cheap Jaffa Cakes. Lidl do 2 DF garlic breads, their garlic bread Pizza in the freezer section and their really cheap baguettes in the fridges.

Let us know how you get on. If it is Dairy you should see an improvement in days Smile

Oh and don’t forget there’s an allergy section in MN.
