DS is 19.5months. He has started signing "happy" when I am feeding him.

Mawbroon, would you recommend baby signing? Have always been a bit sceptical but would like to know more from someone who has done it.

mawbroon · 04/06/2007 11:10

I would MinW. I just bought a vocab book and did it myself. Right now, the only proper word he can say is "daddy" but he can sign lots of stuff. He was really sick a couple of weeks ago and I showed him the sign for "sick/sore/ill" and he was doing it as he vomitted the poor lamb, but, once he was better, he did "sick" followed by "finished/gone". He was telling me that he wasn't sick any more. We are moving house and this morning he pointed to the empty space on the wall and signed "clock" then "finished/gone". We also read books together and he does lots of signs as he sees things that he recognises. I guess that without signing, he would still be able to communicate just fine in his own way, but we both get great enjoyment out of it. He constantly amazes me when we go somewhere that he has been before, even if it was a long time ago, he will sign things that he remembers about it.

so sweet, it made my day

RedtartanLass · 04/06/2007 22:30

MB, how lovely. DS2 signed cat to me when he was about 11 months. It was amazing...

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 04/06/2007 22:32

oooh Mawbroon, what book do you use??

feetheart · 04/06/2007 22:48

Mawbroon - that's a gorgeous story.

I've signed with both of mine and DS is about the same age as yours (though no longer bf ) He learnt the sign for 'hurt' yesterday as he fell and scraped his knee and acquired his first ever plaster! He has been coming up to me all day signing 'hurt' and demanding I kiss his knee

To anyone thinking of signing - DO IT. I can't rate it highly enough.

suis · 05/06/2007 01:01

That sounds lovely ! What book would you recommend ?

mawbroon · 05/06/2007 08:21

Hello RTL. Nice to see you on MN again!

I bought the Sing and Sign book but I did find that it didn't have enough signs in it, so I looked up a British Sign Language site and used some of those signs and made up others.

feetheart - that's really cute re the plaster.

FrannyandZooey · 05/06/2007 08:39

Oh DIVINE

I am so

FrannyandZooey · 05/06/2007 08:40

and I would also HIGHLY recommend signing, one of the best things we ever did

mawbroon · 05/06/2007 09:04

Oh Franny, I'm sorry. I read on another thread what you said about having stopped. Just the thought of stopping makes me so I can understand your feelings (I think!)

mawbroon · 05/06/2007 11:57

What's the sign for delicious? My ds just goes "mmmmm" for delicious. Very nice when I am cooking and he mmmmm's at the smell. Glad to know that someone appreciates my cooking.
