wills, tiktok, pupuce, mears - anyone please help. she has given me the maintenance dose of 50mg per day for 7 days but all the info and lactation counsellor says the loading dose is needed as well. i could of course just go into my local chemist and buy canesten oral.

would really like some advice on this.

thanks in advance

Have you shown the GP your info? Could you take B/F counsellor with you?
You could alternatively speak to pharmacist with info at hand and just buy it yourself which is expensive but probably worth it (it is not prescription only). Have you tried topical treatment for you and babe, is that why you need fluconazole (Diflucan)?

mears, thanks for this prompt response. yes, gp has all the info, including referral notes from b/f clinic at hospital. spoke to her yesterday, she will not be persuaded because the loading dose is not in the BNF. She tells me she has also spoken to to the drug company who told her not to prescribe more than 50mg per day. yes we have tried and are continuing with topical treatments, but with not fantastic results so far.

so do you think i should buy it? am in the fortunate position where i'm not concerned about the money only whether i should do it when gp won't.

serenequeen - if this treatment has been advised by the B/F counsellor I would buy it yourself. GPs are 'jacks of all trades and master of none' - your B/F counsellor is the one with the expertise - go with her advice. I would

You're welcome

Probably far too late to this and hope you are sorted now sq. No advice really but reassurance that Diflucan was the only thing that sorted my bf related thrush - and quickly too. I can still remember the relief when bf pain disappeared. HV suggested it and gp willing prescribed after topical treatment had no effect. I would have bought it myself if not prescribed. btw I had no outward symptoms. HTH

thanks for your message, zeebee. unfortunately the oral diflucan hasn't entirely nailed it - although the pain is almost gone now - and we are still doing the topical treatments.

i'm willing to give it 2 more weeks and then it's adios to b/f for me :(, i've read too many stories of how it can last for months, and the treatment regime is restrictive to say the least.

thanks again for your message :)
