Can a six month old take all their milk from a cup?

Need advice - getting desperate. LO STILL won't countenance a bottle. I return to work when he's 24 weeks (DH will care full-time for him). Will LO be OK with a Doidy cup or similar? My HV said he could have lots of liquidy solids to compensate for lack of milk if he won't take enough from a cup. Has anyone else done all their feeds from a cup at this age? Many thanks for any words of wisdom!!

(He has taken tiny amounts from a Doidy and doesn't seem to hate it. He's 3 months at the mo).

I don't thing how they take is a problem so long as they are taking it.

thanks dyzzidi but i meant is it physically possible for them to take large amounts from a cup at six months? He can only take tiny sips at present and some dribbles out!

Have you considered trying different teats for bottles?

Ettenna · 03/06/2007 13:45

yes with different flow rates, both latex and silicone. He holds them in his mouth quite happily but NEVER suckles, even when overdue for a feed. It's so frustrating!!

The tops off Avent Bottles are really good for cup feeding babies. they are just the right size. My daughter had quite a few feeds from these. At 6 months I would have thought it would be fine to have a beaker once he gets the hang of it.

dd (6 months) has never taken a significant amount from a bottle but over the last few weeks has grown increasingly competent at drinking from a cup (one with a spout and a doidy cup). I wouldn't worry too much - there will be a lot of development between now and 24 weeks.

Yes! I posted a similar question a while ago as i wanted to cut down BF and didn't want to introduce a bottle. LO now gets 2 feeds a day from a cup (doidy or wide knecked bottle) She takes 5oz at a time. At first it was a bit messy but now there is hardly any spillage and you wouldn't believe how fast it goes down (usually followed by a massive burp). BTW DD is 7.5 months.

My dd would not take a bottle for months, I just kept perservering and by about 5 months she would take one easily. Ds is 3 months old and will take a bottle on about one attempt out of every five!

My DS wouldn't take a bottle until he was just over 6 months, until then he would take miniscule amounts from a cup and I couldn't see him ever being able to just use a cup.

He's now 7m and is quite capable of taking daytime feeds from a cup (will take 5Oz, would probably take more if hungrier). I tend to use a cup with a little spout for milk and save the doidy for water for the time being.

Thanks everyone; that helps!

my dd got a throat infection at 6 months and screamed whenever we tried giving her milk from a bottle, so we switched to a cup.
first few times she only took tiny bits but we perservered cos we thought tiny bits were better than nothing and after about 4 feeds she got it. i think she was so hungry she just kind of figured it out.

looking back it was the bast thing i ever did cos then i had no more sterilizing bottles! it was great and i intend to try and do the smae agian this time round!

when dd was about 7 months I went back to work and the nursery nurses were amazed that she drank from a doidy cup and not a bottle. I also used a soft spout cup that Heinz used to make a few years ago and she took all her milk away from me via one of these ways. I did introduce a bottle later for evening feeds when I stopped BF at 15 months since she got comfort from the sucking but apart from that she has been cups and beakers all the way
