At what age is it appropriate to refuse breastfeeds for a baby and offer water during the night?

I don't think I ever did. Babies feeding through the night is normal. Maybe by 12 months but each baby is different. Mine just tailed off night feeds and that was fine. Mind you I had extended ML/career break so wasn't overly pressured. Hmmmmm.

How old is your baby? BF isn't solely about nutrition (you know this already, haha)

I never have. DD stopped waking for me when she didn't need me any more.

How old is baby?

I didn't ever stop until they stopped waking for feeds. Partly because I was still breastfeeding when I went back to work and so I knew they would be getting a decent amount at night from me.

At around 6 - 7 months I was breastfeeding at night and giving bottles during the day.

DD very much preferred bottles and when she realised she would only get breast and not bottles at night she gradually stopped waking up for it. We had a couple of tricky nights where I would offer breast (refused) and then water in a bottle (spat out and then refused) before that happened though.

Thank you for your replies. My youngest is currently only 5 months so obviously not looking to do this yet, but I can't remember exactly how old my daughter was when I offered her water during the night instead of breastmilk! Interesting many of you say your children gradually stopped themselves,
Hopefully this will be the case with my youngest!
