France: BF in public

Hi, DH and I are off to the south of France in a couple of weeks with DS (almost 1 year old). He is still bf a few times a day and I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience of bf in public in France, and what the attitudes are. Good? Bad? Should I hide and feed him inside? Thanks.

sadly i heard today from a french woman that they can be a bit funny about older babies. i would try doing it anyway. i sort of think how are things ever going to change if people don't do it?

AlbertaWildRose · 01/06/2007 16:29

Hmmm, that's what I was worried about. Oh well, I'll try it and see how it goes!

I fed DS2 all over the Dordogne last summer when he was 18mos. Didn't notice anyone batting an eyelid.

I did it with my 15 month old baby last summer in SW France, and can't remember getting any funny looks/comments. I did it on the beach and in cafes/restaurants. I am sure you'll be fine

I bfed my 3 month old in northern france & found it more acceptable than here- no one blinked an eyelid. Now the lack of baby changing is a different matter......but they are all quite happy for you to change baby whereever you can when eating out.

BF my 10 month old in Provence last summer. In cafes & restaurants, in the parks and in the street when I had to and didn't notice any odd looks.

erm, well got told it was 'only for the mother's pleasure' whatever that is supposed to mean when i bf ds2 in a hospital once in marseilles - he was 1 at the time. but to be fair, i wouldn't be surprised to get told something similar in the uk either

Thanks for all your comments, everyone. Sorry to take so long writing back- right after I posted on Friday, our computer broke down, and this is the first chance I have had on another machine!
