Milk's not our friend at the moment - lactose intolerance even in reaction to breastmilk- how to proceed?

Ds - 7 m.o. - reacted to dairy ten days ago. Since then:

  • even a tiny bit of his regular formula milk gives him instant green mucousy runny tummy and bad bad gas. We'd noticed before how too much formula would give him gas - but it went off the scale at the mo.
  • Doc's given us lactose free formula - which he tolerates fine up to 10oz a day - but any more gives him 'extreme gas'.
  • breastfeeding seems to give him bright green poos - a reaction to lactose in my bm? I've cut out dairy myself in sympathy.

What can I do to help him digest the lactose? Don't want to quit bf - but can't be great for him to have green poos. Would 'colief' or similar help?

He's OK in himself- but grouchy. Maybe teeth - but more weepy than I'm used to from him.

We're on the list to see a paed next month. GP says lactose intollerance will pass with timer, but he'd like the reaction to dairy looked at. I'm quite stressed about the situation at the mo. We also need to fix his tum, because he needs antibiotics for something else!

Any ideas?

My DD has a severe cow's milk protein allergy. If i have dairy she does not react to my breast milk in the same way but she does tend to puke it up. I cut dairy out totally and she is fine with my breast milk now. It is hard but good luck.

Hiya, sometimes temporary lactose intolerence can be caused by the 'friendly' bacteria in the gut having been flushed away with runny poos. Our local nutritionist recommended that we'd give DS a supplement called ABCdophilus, which is a blend of frienly bacteria for infants and children. It can help restore the flora in the gut. It's not an 'instant' solution but it can help. I bought mind in our local health shop. It's expensive though.

No dairy in the mum's diet will make difference at all to the breastmilk - lactose is in the breastmilk whatever the mum's diet.

Ot's cow's milk protein intolerance that may improve with a change in the mother's diet.

Very occasionally, with severe secondary LI, babies' have to come off bf for a short time
