Accidentally gave 9 month old honey!

I can't believe I've done this.

I just gave 9 month old dd a small amount of my yogurt from the end of my spoon and it had a bit of honey in it. I'm absolutely kicking myself. I've looked up symptoms of infant botulism to look out for, is there anything else I could/should do?

Highly unlikely to be worth worrying about. The honey in a manufactured yog will have been pasteurised and processed and therefore free of botulism. If in doubt call the manufacturers of the yog - most packaged foods have an info number on the packaging itself.

GMtoBe · 28/07/2018 18:44

It was plain yogurt that I added honey to just to clarify

I’m sure she will be fine

Pebblespony · 28/07/2018 18:46

It's extremely unlikely that anything will happen. I have never heard a case of it in real life. Ever.

tiktok · 28/07/2018 18:47

Oh sorry - thought you meant honey yoghurt.

Ok, call the manufacturers of the honey. Most branded non-raw non-natural state honey is pasteurised.

Infant botulism is incredibly rare.

SouthernComforts · 28/07/2018 18:50

I didn't even know this was a thing Confused

dementedpixie · 28/07/2018 18:53

If it was a tiny amount they ate then it should be fine.

EdWinchester · 28/07/2018 18:54

Not worth stressing over.

brainepson · 28/07/2018 18:54

I wouldn't remotely worry about this, it's totally fine! Don't do anything, definitely don't call the manufacturers, that's a bonkers idea. She'll be fine!

brainepson · 28/07/2018 18:56

I've just looked it up and it's very rare, botulism, I honestly wouldn't worry.

Hangingaroundtheportal · 28/07/2018 18:57

Honestly the chances of anything bad happening here are miniscule. If you want to look up the symptoms of botulism so that you know what to look out for (I don't even really know what botulism is?!) then do, but don't stress that she has caught it. She will be fine Smile

GMtoBe · 28/07/2018 18:57

Thanks everyone, I know I'm massively overreacting! I'm such a worrier.

11 cases in 30 years in fact. And your baby is 9 months, not 1 month. It'll be fine.

purpledreamcatchers · 28/07/2018 18:58

I did this, well my husband did with some help from his Nan. They gave it her because she had a sore throat 🤦‍♀️ Anyway don't panic we called 111 and they said it is really really rare for there to be any issues and just to keep an eye on her.

MissMarplesKnitting · 28/07/2018 18:59

Yeah my youngest had her first food honey coated....was on my lap on Christmas Day and grabbed a honey roast parsnip off my plate and pushed it in.

She was fine. And we started BLW there and them.

dementedpixie · 28/07/2018 19:01

P.s. pasteurization doesn't kill off the spores so that wouldn't help. For a PP, honey shouldn't be given to babies under the age of 1 due to a small risk of infant botulism

purpledreamcatchers · 28/07/2018 19:04

And yes as possible said the spores aren't killed by pasteurisation, that is why they say to avoid it until 12+ months old.

tiktok · 28/07/2018 22:44

Oops sorry about the pasteurisation error....but in any case agree with PP, there's nothing worth worrying about :)

greensnail · 28/07/2018 22:55

Dd2 was given honey as a newborn by a family member. Apparently it is a cultural thing when new baby visits their house they are given honey and oil on their head. Only they didnt do the oil bit because they thought i wouldn't like it HmmI panicked about it for weeks but she was fine.
