Hello. Just a question. My daughter is 2 weeks old and she is taking 4-6ozs every 2 hours is this too much for a 2 week old to be feeding? Thanks

If that’s what she’s taking and it doesn’t cause her any harm then that’s what she needs.

Formula should be worked out on weight rather than age, so she should be getting roughly 2.5 floz per pound in weight in 24 hours. Does that sound like the anountcshes having?

Better to check with midwife/hv when it comes to questions like this, IMO.

Julie's arithmetic is right.

It sounds a huge amount.

Seek professional advice - you can call your hv tomorrow.

She's currently 7 pound 1 ozs. She constantly hungry and wanting feeding every hour and a half-2 hours and can take 4-6 ozs each time. Which I thought sounded a lot for her to take in as a baby stomach is not very big.

My baby is a month old is now taking 6oz every 3 hours! So that sounds like a lot for a 2 week old!

16oz in 24h would be what she needs based on 150ml/kg/day (standard amount in paediatrics). Some babies will take a little more 165-180ml/kg/day (or for your daughter, up to around 19oz per day).

So it does sound like she is feeding much more than usual. Fortunately it isn't dangerous so try not to worry too much! Your HV should be able to tell you if she is gaining weight too fast (getting fat basically).

The main problem is reflux and vomiting. Babies tummy's don't usually manage with very large amounts of milk and it could make reflux symptoms worse or be the main cause of reflux. Symptoms might be - vomiting a lot, mouthing / grimacing motions after a feed, crying after feeds, back arching, drawing up her legs.

Quite a lot of babies with reflux demand lots of milk as they are soothed by the sensation of swallowing a liquid (just like in adults!) so it can become a bit of a cycle.

Or it may be she is one of those babies who would give you more of a break if she had a dummy.

If she really isn't experiencing any distressing symptoms and isn't getting too fat then you don't need to change anything. Some babies just puke up the excess and are perfectly happy. A bit expensive, tiring and messy for you though! Ask your HV for further advice.

You could try slowing down her feeds (so that she has less in total) and gradually reducing the amount, and you may find that she then seems less hungry (if she is feeding to comfort herself because of reflux)

She not long ago got weighed, she gained 10 ozs in 6 days. She has currently got a dummy. She seems to constantly want a bottle when I try giving her a dummy that doesn't appear to last long as she just constantly want feeding. She appears to gag during a feed and pull faces but once I take the bottle away she cries for more.
