Oral thrush in 5 wk old - Nystatin didn’t work

Not sure where to post this but hoping someone can help. My DD is almost 5 weeks old and she’s had oral thrush. Last Monday she was prescribed Nystatin and I was given Daktarin for my nipples. She took it 4 times a day for a week and really really hated it. Every time I gave it to her we had a bit of a battle with her trying to spit it out and me trying to catch it and get it back in her mouth! Sometimes I felt she’d had a proper dose; sometimes I felt she’d spat most of it out. Anyway, we’ve now finished the bottle but she still has the white coating on her tongue so I don’t think it’s cleared up properly (maybe because she keeps spitting it out?) Has anyone else found Nystatin to not be very effective? Is there anything else out there that is more effective? I’m taking her back to the doctor this afternoon and I don’t want her to just be given more of the same.

I had this with my DD at a similar age it is hard to get rid of and I remember having to have the treatment afew times. What finally cleared it was my GP gave me some tablets which were stronger than just cream. Also she told me to keep treating me and DD with the cream/gel for afew days after symptoms had gone just to make sure it had completely cleared.

There is an alternative miconazole which is a gel. There is an alert on the packaging to make sure people don’t squirt it into babies mouth/make them choke. You can use a pea sized amount and smear it inside cheeks.

Having said that get dr to check if it is thrush and not tongue just a bit coated.

Do you have nipple symptoms? If they are ok I’d still use the cream for a while, prevention better than cure in my experience!

We had this and the only thing that sorted it was grapefruit seed extract drops in water. Thrush feeds off sugar at I believe (I'm not a doctor or a scientist) and I think nystatin has sugar in it.

It was really tedious applying it on myself and with drops into my DS' mouth but it worked on the end.

A white coating on the tongue is normal in many babies and isn’t necessarily thrush. Mine had the same when I had thrush and still does...4 months later. It’s just milk fat sticking to the tongue. A better indication is if baby seems in pain when feeding and if you still have symptoms.

When I had thrush, the advice was to treat both of us until symptoms totally cleared (about 10-14 days) and then treat a further week after, so we did 3 weeks of treatment. That worked. No idea if he ever even had thrush, but I did and we had no more problems after that. You may just need to keep treating longer. I went through 2 tubes for each of us.
