Lumps in cow and gate anti reflux milk!!

Hi, I’m coming to the end of my tether! I’ve had to change my LO to anti reflux milk and already in 24 hours it has been great, he has only been sick once when it was constant before! The only thing is I’m finding no matter what I do there are lumps in the milk and I have to keep taking the bottle off him to fish out the lumps clogging the teat which is obviously frustrating for both of us! I’m following the instructions so I don’t know what else to do, does anyone have any tips? Xx

Obvious things would be water not hot enough/not shaken enough.

StacyHall · 05/07/2018 08:31

I use water when the kettle has just boiled, and shake vigorously, I’ve even tried shaking after each scoop

Water may be too hot I found this with aptamil comfort, needs to be not freshly boiled I left for about 15 mins

BigCarrot · 05/07/2018 08:36

Also shake by swirling and side to side then up and down

You don't mix reflux milk with boiling water, it reacts with the milk and causes huge lumps.
You need to use warm not boiling water to mix.

We made the same mistake when we put our DD on the Aptamil Reflux. The instructions on the side say to wait at least 40 mins after kettle has boiled. I would recommend a prep machine, you put all the water in first, so your 'hot shot' then fill it up, then put the powder in.

Ahh okay! Thank you, I just assumed that the water needed to be boiling to sterilise the powder

I think most specialist milk needs to be made with cooler water? Should be written on the box

StacyHall · 05/07/2018 10:17

Is the powder already sterile?

Definitely too hot water! I’ve discovered this with aptamil ans experimentation. If I use the kettle
Before 30 mins cooling I get lumps. Frustrating as means I need to be organised. I can see the appeal of the perfect prep but I’m too tight to buy one!

My boy wakes in the night at different times at the moment and he’s literally screaming as soon as he wakes up, I hate seeing him upset so I try to get the bottle done as soon as possible, my brother was supposed to be buying us a prep machine as a gift when baby was born but it never arrived.. he’s 7 weeks old now! Never mind, I’ve bought a rocking chair so I’ll have to rock him while the water cools xx

Do t have kids but noticed that adsa are having a baby event with the prep machine at £60

BigCarrot · 05/07/2018 10:43

I don't have a prep but I usually boil the kettle between feeds, leave for up to 30 mins then pour into a thermos it keeps it hot enough for next feed if its full so you don't have to wait for the kettle. Before when I was using comfort milk I'd leave min 15 but it was still too hot and a pain to wait!

Good idea BigCarrot! I’ll do this! Thanks HoneyBeeq I’ll go online now and have a look! Thanks all! Xx

@StacyHall look on Gumtree for a second hand one. Buy a bottle of Milton sterilising solution or use the tablets and do a few rinses through the system. You can find the instructions online. Then repeat and do this every month. Plus buy new filter in fact you can get the new filter and Milton solution both on amazon. The filter needs changing every 3 months. They need a lot of care which is why people maybe had problems with the perfect prep? X
