Gaviscon vs anti reflux milk

My DD has reflux and is barely keeping down any feeds. We have tried aptimil anti reflux which did keep the milk down, however she wriggled and swirled in agony, looking like she needed the relief of being sick but couldn't. She also got terrible constipation. I have been offered gaviscon by the gp but i haven't tried this yet. I know this also causes constipation but does it just do the same as the anti reflux milk by holding it down or does it offer some relief too?Just wondered if it was worth giving it a try. Feel like all I've done is change milks, offer different bottle types and added soothers. My DD is sure to be confused, poor thing!

Hi, we feel your pain!

We are going through the same thing at the moment, prescribed gaviscon today (he's 5 weeks old).

We were told to try the comfort milk (we're using SMA) but I found the anti reflux SMA as well!

We've tried the anti colic bottles, teets, infacol and there has been very very minor improvements.

So last feed we've tried him on the anti reflux milk and as yet there has been nothing come up!

Just hoping there's no constipation :(

But just wanted to say your not alone right now!

Thank you @firsttimedad. It's reassuring to know theres others out there although u wouldn't wish this stress on anybody. Just to let you know, we may have turned a corner. After another GP visit, we were prescribed aptimil cow's milk free formula to check if this was down to an intolerance. I'm not sure it is as there's still a tiny bit of wriggling but she's keeping it down and is generally much more settled. Also spoke to a lady in the pharmacy who said her DD was the same and wgmhat eventually worked for her was aptimil lactose free milk. Perhaps the non hypoallergenic formulas are too harsh on their little tummys. The anti reflux milk is good for keeping down but DD still looked very uncomfortable trying to digest it, not to mention the rock hard stools! I hope you find some relief soon.

It is extremely unusual for a baby to be allergic to lactose OP. If she’s better on the milk free formula it’s more likely that she has Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) as about 4% of the population have it. You’ll need to see a Oaediatric Dietician before Weaning Smile
