Non-maternity nursing tops

Does anyone know where you can buy nursing clothes that aren’t maternity wear I.e. don’t have swathes of extra fabric for a bump I don’t have? (Why are they all like this anyway?! Surely overlap of pregnant / nursing people is actually pretty small?!)

I don’t have the answer but I find this maddening too. Nursing bras don’t need to be maternity wear, they’re literally the opposite of each other.

KirstenRaymonde · 26/06/2018 08:27

Nursing tops/wear that should be.

Try layering (not great in current weather though...)
I loved thin strap normal H&M vest to pull down, normal tshirt/whatever on top to pull up.
Upper boob and belly coverage without being maternity/floaty

I think the trouble is that the number of people who breastfeed past the first 6 months is very small so there’s not a huge market for specialist breastfeeding clothes as it is. Combined maternity/nursing clothes seem quite sensible when you’re pregnant- something to wear while you’re pregnant that will be easy and comfy for the early days of breastfeeding.

The only non maternity nursing tops I’ve found have been from mamafeelsgood.com. They are ok but I’ve got a bit bored of them now.

It’s annoying because especially in this hot weather I don’t really want to do the whole one up one down thing.

Maybe take a look at New Look and H&M’s stuff - I think most shops assume that the majority of people breastfeeding stop before they have completely got back to their pre-pregnancy shape and so assume we want a ton of material to cover it up! Have you seen the Facebook group ‘Can I Breastfeed in it? UK’ - lots of suggestions on there. Lots of people seem to do a vest under normal top combination (one up, one down) but that doesn’t seem to work with lots of my old clothes (and feeding 2 at s time!) so on days I’m likely to be feeding more I end up in the same old feeding tops...

Honestly your best bet is regular clothes which allow access. Buttoned shirts, stretchy vests and tees, scoop necks you can pull a boob out of. It's cheaper too.

Get on Can I Breastfeed In It? on Facebook.

I tend to layer a vest top and then a looser top so that I just lift the outer layer up and pull the vest top down. It gives better coverage than a lot of proper nursing wear, and yes the tops then fit my non-pregnancy tummy properly.

I have found a couple of little gems that are not actually nursing wear but that are great for nursing. I wanted to link a dress I bought in Sainsbury last month that has enough give in it to just pull to one side to feed but it's no longer on the site so must have sold out.

Jojo Maman Bebe do a few alright t shirts and t shirt dresses that are just for nursing and no maternity that I quite like wearing. Completely agree though, it's hard to find clothes like that!

Rinceoir · 26/06/2018 08:44

It’s really hard- I quite liked feeding tops when DD was born. She was born in summer 2014 and it was very hot- far too hot for one up one down! I got some in Mamas and Papas which were stretchy and fitted quite nicely in not pregnant state.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 26/06/2018 08:50

I live in H&M nursing vests which are good, cheap and not cut for maternity as a base layer. I'm also happy to just pull a t-shirt up - today I'm wearing a plain h&m cotton t-shirt and skirt. Primark tank dresses are something I discovered recently - buy one a few sizes up and they're easily stretchy enough to slide a shoulder down to feed.

Recent hits on CIBII include an eBay button-front sundress and a Sainsbury's zip-front pineapple jumpsuit. You can feed in a lot more stuff than you think.

This lady set up her clothing line for exactly the same reason - nice breast feeding clothes that aren't maternity fit. Some really lovely items!

I was having a moan about this the other day, but instead wanted dresses I could wear as all my summer clothes don’t allow for a boob to get out. I got 3 dresses from Asos in the end, only one is an actual nursing one but the other two are flexible enough to allow me to feed (both are v neck and one has tie straps). With Tops I just pull them up to feed.

jusdepamplemousse · 26/06/2018 09:45

Thanks all! I do know re ouod but too bloody hot for wearing two tops at the moment (I know it’s not that hot but I’m still in the newborn slightly stressy stage which is making me feel it I think!). And button down tops and dresses are grand but a little exposing - I have big boobs and DS still obviously nursing little and very often so all quite faffy and ending up very wrinkled. Just want stuff I can slip a nip out of subtly really! Think will get a few bits off the hot mama site - name put me off but it’s actually lovely! Thank you bored !

Search for the FB group 'can I breastfeed in it?'. Lots of everyday clothes are really easy to breastfeed in Smile

mehhh · 26/06/2018 11:06

H&M is good!

Boredoftryingusernames · 26/06/2018 12:20

Great, glad you found some bits you like!
