Question on making up ff once over 6 mths

I'm trying to get my bf baby to take one bottle of formula each day for when I go back to work in 10 days as I'm having trouble expressing enough.

My question is do I have to use boiled water when she is over 6 mths or can I use tap water if it is being consumed immediately? She is drinking tap water from a cup with meals. I would boil the water if it was being made up in advance but am not sure if I need to otherwise? My mother will be looking after her at home so it will be easier for her (or me!) not to have the faff of boiling and cooling the water if it isn't needed

I stopped boiling water before 6 months. And I used to fill the whole days' bottles with the right amount of water at the beginning of the day too.

it depends how much you stick to the guidelines as they say to add the powder to boiled water that has been left no longer than 30 mins and then cool it under cold water to the right temperature.

I personally boil the kettle and add the boiled water to all the bottles and then only add powder when a feed is due. I use a powder dispenser (avent) and premeasure the powder so all I have to do is open the bottle, add the powder, shake and its ready

The NHS 'birth to five' book says you can give them tap water straight from the tap to drink so why wouldn't you use it to make up a bottle. My friend challenged her HV about it and HV hgad to concede that it was a completely logocal statement and couldn't come up with reason why not!

Would the powder dissolve in tap water ? I always boiled - you could do part and part, ie boiled for 2/3 to dissolve it then top up with cold tap water to reduce temperature. Would n't use water from the hot tap as it has been festering in the tank.

if you were using hot boiled water (left for 30mins)to make the bottles then the heat would kill the bacteria in the milk powder which is why you are advised to make them that way. I still use cool boiled water for my ds's bottles even though I dont add the powder at once (but I'm not sure why I still do it...lol

p.s. the powder I use dissolves in room temperature water - not sure about water straight from the tap - wouldnt it be a bit cold?

chilledmama · 23/05/2007 13:34

Put in desired amount of water. Heat water in microwave or any other way you wish. Add powder et voila

Aptimil dissolves in cold water...it takes a little bit of effort but it does dissolve! I've heard that SMA laughs at cold water though so it definately depends on brand!

Thanks for all the responses - I am using the Hipp organic formula and have just had a go at making a bottle up with tap water and it seems to dissolve ok. Think I will go with this method. Lazy? Me???

i dont know about other formulas, but my ds is on Enfamil, which is an ant-reflux formula, and it states to put in room temp water and heat after it has dissolved!

as for water from the tap......iv never even thought about it, dont see why i still do as ds has water straight from the tap to drink....might think about it after our holiday!

I would n't drink hot water from a tap - it has been reheated several times over in a tank - so wouldn't feed it to a baby .
