Greediest baby ever?

My baby is 10 weeks old, but he was born early at 33+4, so his 'corrected' age is about 4 weeks. He is breastfed, and he feeds well, or perhaps too well? I know people say that breastfed babies know how much they need and won't overeat, but I don't think recognising satiety is ds's string point. He feeds very frequently and is often sick after. He also has the charming habit of sometimes puking ON my breast whilst feeding, and then continuing to feed without missing a beat. Is this normal? / Anyone else have similar? He is generally healthy, gaining weight well, plenty of wet and dirty nappies etc.

Is he just returning a mouthful of milk with some wind ? That's normal.

Do you burp him? .. my DS wasn't that keen on being burped just wanted to guzzle.

Honestly sounds pretty standard they feed, snooze or just snuggle in and then feed a bit more.

I don't feel I got off the sofa until my DS was about 10 weeks

Could it be reflux? Perhaps he is feeding to soothe it but then the reflux makes him throw some of it up.

TheWineDarkSea · 16/06/2018 22:34

Is he gaining weight very fast? Because sickiness (not just posseting) when combined with fast weight gain can be a sign of over supply. Which is fairly easy to fix, kellymom.com has some good advice.

Otherwise, it sounds like normal breastfed baby behaviour to me. But worth going to a local breastfeeding group if you have one, as it can be really good to chat to other breastfeeding mums, and get a feel for the (wide range of) normal for breastfed babies.

Thanks for the replies!

I do burp him - when he lets me - sometimes I get a burp and sometimes he is just too wriggly and demanding to go back in the breast to get a burp out of him.

I think he does have reflux, as he wriggles and gets uncomfortable, making a sort of sour expression, before bringing milk up.

Interesting idea re oversupply... I'm not sure how to judge it. I do think I have too much for him to cope with at least at the start of feeds as he pulls away frequently and milk spurts all over the place, sometimes in several 'jets', and I have the impression that he is pulling away as it's too much too fast.

I'm getting him weighed again this week so I'll be able to see the rate of gain. And I'll go to a breastfeeding group to get some views there.

Thank you!

That does sound like over supply - the jets of milk and choking at the breast and pulling away. You can try feeding lying down / leaning back, which means gravity is against the milk flow and can help. And there's no down side to trying that.

If that doesn't work, and you're confident it is over supply (look at weight gain and ask a HB / breastfeeding counsellor) there are other things you can do - just one breast each feed, for example. Or express until the first let down is over, and then put the baby on once the flow is a bit slower.

Sounds like mine, including the vomiting over my boobs! I'm going to speak to GP about reflux but I also find mine sometimes gets very gassy.

arbrighton · 18/06/2018 12:57

This was us, including projectile vomiting.

Only ever needed one boob. Grew out of it as he got bigger and my supply settled

LaurieMarlow · 19/06/2018 15:36

Sounds very familiar. I had oversupply issues with DS1. He got a lot of wind because he was struggling to cope with the flow, but he'd keep feeding for comfort and then puke.

It settled down by 4 months, but things that helped us were expressing a bit before feeds, doing a couple of feeds from one breast before shifting, feeding lying down.

As a breastfeeding counsellor said to me, it's more a laundry problem than anything. Grin

Thanks for these responses- really good to hear about other people's experiences! Had him weighed and he'd gained 920g in 26 days. To me that seems a lot but the nurse didn't seem to care. Anyway, if the jets of milk are an indication of oversupply, that sounds like their issue, so I will try out those tips on positioning, pre expressing etc
Thanks again!

This was my dd1. She ballooned to off the centile charts and i was always in trouble at weight ins.. they never belived she was only breastfed.
I had over supply. Look on kellymom as there are tips for this. It settled down once she started moving more amd weaning and now shes a normal size 4 year old.
Dd2 just followed her 75th centile line so i guess all diffetent.

KoshaMangsho · 24/06/2018 06:03

No that’s ok weight gain isn’t in. My second child was/is a 26 weeker and he would roughly gain 400 gms a fortnight while breastfeeding after we came home. He’s not huge though by the time we got to a year he was on the centile charts for his actual age quite comfortably.
