Newborn with milk protein intolerance

Hi everyone,
How long does it take after I stop having milk protein for it to stop effecting my baby? I’ve done this twice previously and I can’t remember how long it was until their tummies got better. This time is far worse so time is going ridiculously slow

(I’m breastfeeding)

I wouldn`t assume it is milk protein, this hot weather does not help. I think I would get some professional advice, just for peace of mind.

FranticallyPeaceful · 05/06/2018 23:32

It was a doctor at alderhey that told me he likely has it

Doctor in a and e or a consultant?

ChocAuVin · 05/06/2018 23:58

Hi, with my DC it took a matter of days to see results but (10 years ago at least) the advice was it could take up to 2 weeks for the proteins to clear fully from yours and baby’s systems. Are you sure it’s dairy?

ChocAuVin · 06/06/2018 00:01

Just seen it’s not your first child with this issue - sorry! Is it possible to rule out other factors which may be contributing?

Good luck — I still remember the utter misery of a baby with CMPI — all 3 of my DC had it. Be strong; this too shall pass!

FranticallyPeaceful · 06/06/2018 00:09

He’s a gastro Doctor in alderhey Children’s hospital who treats my son. He wasn’t certain, no, but the same thing happened to my eldest and to a lesser extent with my second.

He’s been having seizures and they have stopped after stopping milk protein (same with my eldest) but he still has a bad tummy/sickly/mucus poop/etc - so I was just wondering how long it takes for it to completely go so we can say it’s all down to it

@ChocAuVin thank you for your reply! Unfortunately he isn’t. I’m unsure about other factors but all three have positively reacted when milk protein was taken away, it took a long time with my eldest to figure out it was causing the seizures - in fact it took us (including doctors) awhile to figure out it’s why they stopped! They’ve now stopped again for my youngest so it definitely can’t be a coincidence

I think there was a difference within the week with my eldest but can take a good 6 weeks to heal the gut. My youngest is 16 days old and has started with the mucous. I'm really hoping I'm seeing symptoms that aren't there

Poppies9629 · 06/06/2018 19:52

My dd had blood in her poo which cleared up within days, took 4 weeks for her poos to go back to the normal bf mustard colour (they had been dark green).

FranticallyPeaceful · 06/06/2018 20:09

Thank you! It’s been a few days now and his poop has finally gone back to the mustard colour today, his had also been green and mucusy, and sometimes had blood in - so it was good to see today. They were also thicker and not watery! He’s so much more settled today, although not 100% yet. His face is also clearing up from the rash/spots! All in all, it’s been a pretty good day Smile

Yep, DT2 also had blood/mucus nappies but she was also intolerant to the following proteins and reacted through my milk

Soya
Pork
Egg
Shellfish
Fish
Gluten
(and dairy)

I basically was a gluten and soya-avoiding, lamb and chicken consuming but otherwise vegan BF mama for the 18 months I fed the DTs! Please do DM me if you want any support Smile

ChocAuVin · 06/06/2018 20:14

Oh cross-posted, SO pleased to see your update - yay 😀

FranticallyPeaceful · 06/06/2018 20:33

It’s funny you’ve put shellfish actually, because all I’ve had every day since stopping milk/soya protein is one prawn salad a day (terrified of eating right now!) and the last few days he’s been absolutely inconsolable, but this was AFTER settling down for a day after I stopped milk/soya (tldr; maybe a couple of days after I stopped, he settled, had a great day, then I started prawn salad and he was inconsolable again) - I assumed because it’s not out of my system yet, but it didn’t explain why it got worse... anyway today is the first day I’ve not had prawn salad and hes been less grumpy by faaaar.... Could just be the milk still, but I’m not going to be touching the fish again just in case 🤔 it was a rough few days

Theres a CMPA facebook group that is also helpful x

ChocAuVin · 06/06/2018 20:46

Interesting, and definitely worth bearing in mind! When everything has settled and symptoms subsided, and if you are ever feeling particularly brave/reckless, you can try it out again and see 🙂

JiltedJohnsJulie · 06/06/2018 23:12

Ive not had a DC with CMPA but I have it. After a week of elimination I felt so much better and after 2 weeks all of my symptoms were gone.
