Bottle Feeding/Preparation

Hey All! After a long and stressful 18 months, baby number 2 is on his way and due October 2018!

Before I go on, please don’t comment if you are going to be judgemental about our choice of feeding our baby - each to their own.

With our first, we prepared bottles the night before - all sterilised, boiled kettle, filled all bottles to correct ml and then stored on the kitchen worksurface. My son always had room temperature formula and never had an issue with this.

Are people still using this technique? Would love to do the same as we found it easier but intrigued about what people think.

Thanks!

This is definitely not what's recommended and leaving for some time at room temp is allowing bacteria to grow so you may as well not actually bother with sterilising or the kettle

Follow the advice on the packet

Hi Op, I think if you make them in advance for the day you should put all the bottles in the fridge, but I think HV say make them fresh, but appreciate with a screaming baby not always practical.
Then pop them in a bottle warmer to take the chill off if you prefer? Also you need to make sure the water is 70 degrees when adding to the powder, it's to do with powder not being sterile apparently. Take a look at the NSH website about making up bottles - would pop you the link on here, but can't figure out how to add Confused

If you buy pre made bottles of formula and open the baby has to consume the formula within 2 hours for reasons that @arbrighton has mentioned.

Congratulations by the way for October hope all goes smoothly xx

NHS info here.

The formula powder needs to go into recently boiled water (to kill off any bacteria that could be present in the powder), so don't use water that's been sitting on the counter for more than half an hour even if it's in sterilised bottles.

Get a perfect prep machine

Long time ago, but I always used to make up a batch, put them in the fridge, and warm as necessary, but at night always took two up and put them in airing cupboard to warm them up ready for night feeds!! Probably the worst thing ever, but never had any upset with either baby. Advice is always changing, but I am sure we all used to pre-make batches of 6 for a 24 hour period.

I make them up for 24 hours, cool quickly and store at the back of the fridge.
