Need to go dairy free

Not sure if this is the right place for this, so feel free to let me know if I need to get it moved!

My little boy is 4 weeks old, and there is a possibility he has an intollerance to cows milk, this was suggested by a breastfeeding specialist as he has become very fussy after feeds, fidgety when on the breast and has had mucousy nappies. She has suggested I go dairy free to see if this helps, has anyone got any advice?

I disagree about a second opinion. It sounds to me as if the OP’s baby has enough symptoms to make it worth doing a dairy-free trial. OP, to confirm CMPA you cut out all dairy for 6 weeks and then challenge it, on the website and FB group I mentioned they call it the “yogurt test” whereby you eat a portion of yogurt (or something else high up the middle ladder like milkshake or ice cream) and then wait 72 hours to see if your baby reacts. If they do the allergy is confirmed.

milk ladder not middle ladder!

Name just to be clear, there is no way is I suggesting that the OP didn’t trial a DF diet. As the symptoms could also be caused by tongue tie and the OP wasn’t clear on whether the Bfing Specialist had any recognisable qualifications, it just seems sensible for her to talk this through with a BFC or Lactation Consultant.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and helpful links. Today's picnic was lovely.

The BF specialist has observed a feed and all is good! Funny enough despite his tongue tie his latch has always been good, it was just causing me immense pain to feed him to the point I dreaded him being hungry, which is why it was corrected.

I have no idea what qualifications the specialist I saw has, but will look to see if there is a la leche person in my area and see what they suggest.

Sounds like a good plan Smile
