Newborn feeding advice - hungry boy!

My gorgeous little boy is 4 days old. I started breast feeding but couldn't keep up with his demands! He is a very hungry boy.

He had 90ml every 3.5hrs but lately wants it every 2.5hrs! Is this too much!?

Also he burps afterwards but also tends to have wind and burping episodes. So got some anti colic bottles - hopefully these will help!

Anyone experienced similar? Should I perhaps get the aptamil hungrier milk?

Thanks! Smile

I was worried about the exact same thing.. my baby boy he was having way more than other babies but slept a good amount through the night so on a average 24 period he was only a little over what was estimated (going by the aptamil box). I fed every two hours when he was awake during day and he would only take what he wanted. I think you're fine and would worry. Hope that helps.

My DS would not have been able to go 3.5 hours at that age. Every 2-2.5 is more what I'd expect. They have tiny tummies.

I bottle feed on demand, always have. If he's hungry, I offer him milk, even if it's only been a short while since he had some. He also has more than the box recommends but my HV said that's fine and his weight gain is very stable. Some days he needs far less, some days, lots more.

Feed on demand is (imo) the best way to go. 're breast feeding, often your milk doesn't come until day 3 or 4, which is why the baby wants to feed so much in the early days. It's to stimulate your supply.

Offer milk whenever he is showing hunger signs. With luck, he will feel more frequently in the day and then have slightly longer stretches of sleep at night (although at this age, nighttime feeds are of course still necessary).

If there are two feeds in a row where he absolutely drains his bottle, I would take this as a sign to make larger bottles and so go from 3 ounces to 4 ounces or whatever stage you are at.

You mention burping him afterwards; if you're not already doing it and if he is windy, consider taking a or two break mid-feed to burp him then as well.

I wouldnt even think about the hungry milk. Do all of the above. At his age, having a good appetite and having enough milk to meet it is a good thing.

The guidelines on the formula cans are really very general and there is a wide scope of normal between individual babies. Keep feeding him!

Congratulations and best wishes.

Don't worry OP. At this age they're very good at knowing when they're hungry and stopping when they're full. Just give him as much as he needs.

Hi OP. If you are still keen to bf it really is not too late. It’s a shame to give up if you had planned to do it, as it does not sound as if there has been anything too unusual happening. Obv it’s your choice but if you want to start again you absolutely can.

Have you googled how small a newborn stomach is?
2.5 hours is quite good and he was 'hungry' as he was cluster feeding to bring your milk in and putting his order in for future days.

Let him lead the way and try not to force him to finish a bottle if he seems reluctant too.
