i think sage is supposed to be the herbal rememdy.

I found a really really tight sports bra type thing (nothing with wire)that strapped 'em down the best thing - anyform of movement can be agony!!

theUrbanDryad · 12/05/2007 11:56

if she's still in hospital then i think they can give her an injection which will dry up her milk. she can ask her mw or nurse, or someone may be along later to confirm/deny it.

phoebebouffet · 12/05/2007 17:29

There is drug called carbagolene (not sure of spelling)although I don't think it is used routinely though - I was told I might need it if I needed surgery for breast abcesses. I think the engorgement only lasts a few days but SAVOY CABBAGE LEAVES all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!

belgo · 12/05/2007 17:30

A warm shower can help ease the pain.

LittleMouseWithCLogsOn · 12/05/2007 17:31

cabbage a pile of crap for me

ChocolateFace · 12/05/2007 17:34

I think her milk will 'come in' whether she breast feeds or not.

shonaspurtle · 12/05/2007 17:34

Ibuprofen? Tight fitting bra is supposed to be good and it will go away quite quickly.

ChocolateFace · 12/05/2007 17:37

Sorry to be nosey, but why doesn't she want to breast feed anymore?

lyndyloo · 12/05/2007 19:57

Latch the baby on and watch that engorgement just disappear! Seriously - not being judgemental but why does she not want to bf. One day is not long enough to give it a go!

Sorry if I sound harsh, don't mean to be - I just feel sad that women give up quickly and babies miss out on something they love so much!

purpleturtle · 12/05/2007 19:58

My SIL was strapped up while in hospital, IIRC.

chocolattegirl · 12/05/2007 20:16

She can always draw the milk off in a warm bath but it'll likely to come back again.

The engorgment isn't likely to be the milk itself but her breast tissue itself swelling up from the increase in hormones rushing around her body. Not much you can do about that!

ChocolateFace · 12/05/2007 20:20

I am no expert, but I have breast feed 3 babies. Would it be least painful to breast feed now, and stop breast feeding in a week or two, if she really, really doesn't want to breast feed?

foxybrown · 12/05/2007 20:22

Its unavoidable in the first instance i think - you wake up on day 2 or 3 and there they are. She can express by hand if she doesn't want to breastfeed, but Savoy Cabbage leaves really, really do the trick and help the pain and cools them down. Its just part of the process, I'm afraid.

ChocolateFace · 12/05/2007 23:20

If your wife really doesn't want to breast feed, would she consider expressing milk? It might help with the engorgemnet, and it really would be best for baby to have some of mums milk.

macmama73 · 12/05/2007 23:29

I didn't breastfeed my 2nd child because of the difficulties I had with the first one. The hospital gave me tablets to stop the milk which worked well. (I assume they are available in UK too, we live in Germany) If she has any pain, I can recommend warm showers.

Oh, and congratulations on the birth of your baby!

ChocolateFace · 13/05/2007 13:03

How is Lolabelle doing?

belgo · 13/05/2007 13:10

yes, how is lolabelle and the baby? I think it was her thread discussing calling the baby Lola, several months ago

tiktok · 13/05/2007 18:16

lolabelle, are you sure your wife does not want to bf anymore? She won't be able to stop her milk coming in, whatever she does....that's the biology of it. She may have nad a hard first day - it would be a shame for her to stop bf if it's something she wants to do and which she could do with some help and good info....ask away if you would like this

Lolabelle · 14/05/2007 10:59

Hi its Lolabelle here (my husband used my logon!) - thanks for all your help, decided against breastfeeding for numerous reasons befor ei gave birth but ending up giving him the first days or two yellow milk (forgotton the name) whilst i waited for my feeling to get back into my legs after the ceasarean and then stopped. It was well thought out and i breast fed my first and am actually quite pro breastfeeding but it really is the best for my situation these days and he did manage to shred my nipples to bits n the one day he did it so maybe i have avoided torture somehow in the long run although i promise i didn't give up because of that!!

Anyway Huey (i went with it depsite the heatde debate!!) was born a few days ago and my breasts are still horrendous but i am off to buy a savoy and am feeling a bit more positive about the pain subsiding soon as i am reassured that it will THANKFULLY, i can hoestly say the ceasarean aftermath pain was probably preferable to this!!

Thank you all so much for responding to my husband as the hospital was so busy i rarely got a chance to chat to the midwives so thank you all!!!

congratulations lolabelle on the birth of Huey!

Lolabelle · 14/05/2007 21:31

Thanks!! Well ladies Savoy Cabbage is a dream!! Still big and veiny and sore but not so much now that i am in constant agony and so must be going down in size a fraction!! Actually a bit smaller and i'd quite like them to stick around for a while but no such luck, they'll be empty socks this time next week..
