Which formula?

DD is BF but I'm thinking about giving her the odd bottle of formula if I fancy a red wine or two. I express for her childminding days but it's just if I end up without the breastmilk to give her etc.....does it matter which formlua one and for occasional use does it make any difference if it's ready made in a carton rather than powdered?

I think the others do the sachets too, although then you are limited in the size of feed you make up. I think SMA ones were 7.5oz, so it you want anything different it gets more complicated.

lissielou · 11/05/2007 23:12

no it wasnt

MaPickle · 11/05/2007 23:13

Thanks for that .. I am having a good read of the thread ... love how people get all proper worked up on this site it's mint ... as DH said when discussing MN with him, there's thousands of right ways to parent your children but everyone thinks their's is the right one!

MaPickle · 11/05/2007 23:14

theirs even

I tried Cow and Gate, Fairley's, SMA, a couple of soya ones and finally, Aptamil after I found a French research piece recommending it for atopic children. There was a good difference for the better with Aptamil.

ScotGirl · 11/05/2007 23:40

The only formula my breastfed ds would touch (and he chugged it down) was Aptimil.

lyrabelacqua · 11/05/2007 23:42

I used Aptamil ready made cartons for the odd top-up if drinking wine etc.

kateyp · 12/05/2007 07:34

Used Cow and Gate last time as that was what he had on the special care unit (DS1 was mix fed from the word go, although did get to exclusive bfing for a few months) - got looks for using that due to the whole cow and gate/third world thing.

This time have given the odd bottle of aptamil as a friend used it with hers. He seems OK on it so far and milk supply no worse than usual - as you say, a little fuller than usual for the next feed.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 12/05/2007 15:23

Ooooh, I might start with Aptamil then. Thank you all!

Another vote for Aptamil. DS had bad wind until we moved him onto this.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 12/05/2007 21:14

I don't think her wind could be any worse than it already is on the breast milk - she farts like a man and they are never short of eye watering

We were an Aptamil household!! I had powder but used to have cartons stored at peoples houses due to the number of times I left bottles behind!!!! If you are only going to be doing an odd bottle here and there, I'd suggest cartons.

stressteddy · 12/05/2007 21:21

I did say Aptamil first!!!!!!

Did you not see??????

XXXX

monkeyandcheekychops · 12/05/2007 21:39

Aptamil here too. I BF DD until she was 9 months and then gradually moved on to SMA follow on stuff..... BIG MISTAKE!

The first week she had only follow on milk the poor wee mite was so constipated I had to go to the hospital! We were advised there to try Aptamil first and she's been great with it. No problems since although I think it's a bit more expensive. Worth every penny IMO!

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 12/05/2007 21:55

You did StressTeddy! It's like all forms of shopping - go back to the first one you saw / heard of!!

Sorry -just thought you had missed it!
I know nothing of any others

I heard about Aptamil through several midwives who said they couldn't really tell me on the record

But off the record their choice would be Aptamil

I used it and have never had any probs

The cartons are great

Go enjoy your glass of wine my darling

oh that's interesting about the midwives....! I must confess that I do feel utterly convinced which is a rareity for me!

My 3 all got on well with Hipp Organic.

Just thought I'd throw that one in!

rebeccalm · 12/05/2007 23:04

Another vote for Aptamil. DD horribly constipated on SMA.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 12/05/2007 23:07

SMA doesn't seem to be a hot fave round here does it

pobletsmum · 12/05/2007 23:08

When DS was 3-4 months, and I stopped b'fing, I researched this and was told cow & Gate & Actamil contained prebiotics/probiotics that the other brands didn't contain. However DS was a very sicky baby & Aptamil made it worse. SMA gave same sickiness as b'fing. Formula milks have probably changed though, as DS will be 2 very soon!

Good luck choosing!

ScaryHairy · 12/05/2007 23:08

See! I told you about the looks.
Well, my daughter gulps it down
