Medela Calma for 8 week old?

Apologies if this has been covered previously - I did have a search on old threads but couldn’t see anything directly relevant.

My baby boy (first child) is 8 weeks old and has been EBF from birth. I found the first couple of weeks of BF quite painful - and had a bout of mastitis to boot - but it’s been fine since then.

My husband and I are keen to encourage DS to take breast milk in a bottle. The tentative plan is to replace one breastfeed per day with a bottle feed (possibly more very occasionally if I plan to go out for a few hours at a time (this is probably still some way off yet!))

I’ve tried expressing (with a Medela Swing) and it seems to be OK. I expressed 150ml in one sitting the other morning - approx 30 mins after a feed. Other attempts have yielded less, but I’m still pretty confident on that front.

Last week DH tried (twice) offering DS the milk (duly warmed) in a bottle. I was hiding upstairs so as not to confuse DS by being there smelling of milk. It didn’t go well. DH said he took a tiny bit at the first attempt but then screamed. And screamed. And then screamed louder. And refused to take any more.

Does anyone have any thoughts or tips? We were using a Medela Calma teat. Might that teat be a bit big / fast for an 8 week old?

Thanks in advance.

I used Medela Calma for top ups with ds1 who was maybe less than 2 weeks. He was fine (starving probably helped him take it) so I wouldnt say the teats.

Dd and ds2 just chewed teats and spat out ..... so I would say persevere or give up.... I did latter!!

Try different teats though if you want to...that might work - babies make their own rules!

Best of luck and well done x

I had mixed success with D'S at 1 week, he took it once and refused twice. Have gone back to ebf now, I think it's v tricky for baby to get the milk out, will persevere more when I go back to expressing!

Similar with our 4 week old, except she's had the occasional bottle since week 2.
Baby initially accepted the Calma but in the last two attempts won't take it & gets very upset. We've ordered a few different bottles to try & find one she'll consistently take.

Baby now 10 weeks and won't take any bottle (I started with Medela Calma)

There doesn't seem to be an answer for us...

I tried medela, minbie and NUK, but mine took to MAM straight away.

Rufffles · 12/04/2018 05:39

@mesgb2225 Do you know if MAM teats will fit a Medela bottle?

They don't I'm afraid, they go with the MAM bottles.

We used Medela for expressed milk from week 2. Friends who left it a bit later and baby rejected the teat found the Minby bottles more successful. Persevere!!!

Medela Calma really worked for us - tried Tommy Tippee and I felt like they were drowning our LO. We used them from week 8/9 and now completely rely on it.

Rufffles · 14/04/2018 09:08

It’s clear from everyone’s responses that every baby’s different, and one approach absolutely does not suit all. I should have guessed that!

We are going to persevere - perhaps trying a different teat next, and trying it at different times of day / when he’s at different stages of hunger and inquisitiveness!

Thank you all for your responses.

Does your baby have a dummy? If so the same bottle as the dummy brand should work.

lsw2018 · 14/04/2018 17:18

MrsGB225 - agree, our has mam dummies & happy with the mam bottles,
