Introducing different kinds of food help!

I've been told by the health visitor to only introduce one new food at a time when weaning so if DD is allergic we know what is causing it, but how long should it be just the one food? Should it be one meal, one day, a couple of days? She's had a bit single fruit puree this morning mixed with breast milk, should I just stick to that one thing today?

What age is she? Do allergies run in your family?

MollyDaydream · 02/04/2018 09:00

There's a pretty minimal chance or her being allergic to fruit or veg. Maybe be a bit cautious the first time she has dairy, egg, peanut, fish but other than that I wouldn't stress about it.

She's 6 months so has only had a bit of fruit this morning. My brother is allergic to gluten and DH has a bit of a milk intolerance but it's not severe.

At 6 months you could also give bits of food rather than just puree. I wouldn't overly worry about giving only 1 food per day or for a few days. That advice is more suited to those weaning before 6 months

Health Visitors advice over weaning has changed dramatically over the time I have been working with children. I didn't wean mine at all, just ket them take what they wanted off my plate until they were 9 monthsish and then gave them small portions of whatever we had. DS has several allergies but they were not hard to diagnose.

I tended to introduce a new food a day then it’s quite obvious what’s caused a reaction if there is one as my understanding of food allergies is they come out fairly quickly

Steeley113 · 02/04/2018 10:12

I never bothered with that. They can eat most things at 6 months.

Thanks everyone, it appears I'm thinking/worrying about this a bit too much! I'll give her something else later.
