Transitioning from breast straight to cup

For a 6 month old baby that is EBF and hasn't ever taken a bottle, what sort of drinking cup is good to try? I'd like to use it for expressed milk and water.

I've seen sippy cups, cups with straws and cups that baby has to tip. Where do we start??

Tommee tippee sippy cups to avoid too much spillage. Or doidy cups if you want an open cup?

Ah thanks!

Has anyone tried the Munchkin Miracle 360 Degree cup? Seems to be a bestseller on Amazon and does look quite practical

I've tried the 360 cup but found that at 6months my DD didn't really know how to use it (didn't realise she needed to suck on it). She did so very well with the doidy cup though. Until she figured out the other ones.

Friend used the 360 cup from about 6 weeks with her baby with a cleft palate. She had great success. We went straight from boob to tommee tippee free flow cup with pur bottle refusing 6 months old. Took a few days to work it out but he got it.

Yup the Tommee Tippee free flow were hands down the best for both my EBF, bottle refusers. Cups they had to suck on just confused them and I found the doidy cup a waste of time to be honest. The TT ones are cheap as anything and available everywhere. We still use them sometimes 5 years on.

Thanks I'll try them!

I liked the tommee tippee really basic ones. If they don't understand it, try it open first and do it very slowly for them. Then once they've got the hang, add the lid, ready opened and kind of sneak it into their mouth before they notice! That way DS took to it, no problems.

We used a 360-type cup from 6 months - not the Munchkin one but similar. I had to help DS lift and tilt it to start with but he got the hang of sipping from it really well. I wonder if being a BF baby, he was used to pressing and sucking with his lips? From 9 months or so he could use it by himself. Once he stops throwing it on the floor, we will try a free flow cup. We've been able to skip bottles, sippy and straw cups altogether - I'm a big fan of the 360 style!

Actually, thinking back, we used a Tommy Tippee soft teat cup from 5 months up till 7ish so must have started with the 360 a bit later. How quickly you forget!! Grin

Doidy cup and the really cheap Tommee Tippee sippy cups (no valve) worked best for us.

Exactly the same scenario with DD - she went from ebf to doidy cup when we started weaning and the n 360 for out and about - she didnt get the hang of the 360 right away but its brilliant now.

GimbleInTheWabe · 26/03/2018 15:25

We've just gone straight to a normal cup, albeit a small one and obviously not glass or anything. Ds drinks from it really well and holds it either side of the cup, I just have to help him to not tilt it too much which hopefully he'll learn himself soon.
