My dd is 1 and she weighs nearly 14kgs (30lbs) which puts her off the charts weight wise at about 105%ile or something she is around 98%ile height. Anyway the HV has asked me to make GP appt. for dd to be checked out - For what I have no idea. She just goes on about protocols and monitoring etc. but I am in the dark about what could poss be wrong with my lovely healthy bouncing baby. I come from a big family of tall well built people genetics must count for something?

I still bf on demand though am introducing cows milk she eats healthily fruit veg n dairy (no meat cos we are veggie) she is active has just started to walk and is never ill.

Has anyone got experience of going off these stupid charts with their dc's???

ds1 was 20lbs at 5 months and 29lbs at age 1, and he was only on the 75th centile for height, he was massive, then he learnt to walk and lost it all, he is now 33lbs at 3yrs old, please don't worry about it, babies come in all shapes and sizes and hv's know bugger all!

rantinghousewife · 09/05/2007 19:53

Agree with all the other posters on here, my ds was huge (Like a michellin man), HV told me when he was 8 months to put him on a diet, I politely took the sheet, walked out and binned it. Never went back. 12 1/2 years later, he is a right bean pole, 5ft8 with size 10 feet. Older children are only, usually obese if they're fed junk all the time and get no exercise iyswim.
Personally, I've got no time for those lousy centile charts which make no allowances for the differing growth rates of children.
You sound like your instincts are spot on, I'd trust that over a HV any day.

misdee · 09/05/2007 19:55

oh gooodness not again. dd2 was huuuge. absolutly huge. was off the chart for height and weight and got so many hassles about it.

there are pics of her on my profile, she is now a very tall slim 4yr old. and set to continue.

whomovedmychocolate · 09/05/2007 20:00

Sweetie, she's a nut! Ignore her. If you know your daughter is fine, your daughter is fine. Period.

As I posted on another thread here today people are made differently at any age. I'm twelve stone at 5ft 2 and I am in a size twelve. Yet according to govt regulations I've obese (naughty me!) Most people fall over when I tell them how much I weigh (and not just because I hit them for asking ).

WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU GO TO SEE A DOCTOR to say your daughter is thriving - to boast???? My baby isn't a skinny little runt hahahahhahah???

What is it this week, is there a special bounty on 'report the big babies' for HV. Perhaps if they register ten as 'fat' they get a t-shirt.

Thanks agin for supportive posts - I did go to the docs just to put a lid on the matter and I will stay away from clinic from now on...

Doc was a bit annoying - said my milk was prob too rich (wtf) and I could stop feeding her now as I had done my bit and was just comfort feeding now... whatever ! I smiled sweetly said yes doctor and will continue to do my thang - your posts and a good pep talk from my older sister (with 7 tall willowy children) has taught me to act slightly dumb and very open to what the professionals say then to go home and forget about it and them!

Yep, - forget about them!

These posts would really make me laugh if it wasn't for the fact that they are real worries for the OP!

Who has the right to define 'normal' anyway!

Show me an 'average' child will you!!!

yellowrose · 16/05/2007 18:44

bigmouth you say:

"i come from a big family of tall well built people genetics must count for something?"

yes it bloody well does, it amazes me that these fools just comment on bf without looking at the parents.

any way, the short answer to growth charts is : "look at the baby", if she is healthy, alert and happy than tell hv where to go.

Aloha · 16/05/2007 18:47

Why are you seeing your HV and gettting a great big healthy one year old weighed? Seriously - why are you still doing this? It isn't compulsory you know. DD hasn't been weighed since she was a few weeks old! She's two.

yellowrose · 16/05/2007 18:50

oh, and i haven't taken ds to see an hv or gp or mw thank god since ds 6 week check when they put me off for life (although ds put on an amazing amount of weight in first 6 months and always followed his own centile) - i weighed him at home regularly and read stuff on kellymom.com so we felt fine.

3 years on all he ever gets is 1 or 2 minor colds that last a max. of 2 nights so no need to go anywhere near a health prof. - he was excl. bf for 6 months and still bf at nearly 3 years. he is shortish, but then dh and i aren't giants, so i reckon it is genetic !

yellowrose · 16/05/2007 18:54

also sorry, just got a letter through the post last week for his 2 - 3 year "development check" where they offer for you to go get child checked out or they can visit you at home - sounds too Big Brother fascist to be honest so i have said i will just fill in the form myself, although i gather even that isn't compulsory.

they have said the most important bit to fill is, wait for it, WEIGHT & HEIGHT

daizydoo · 17/05/2007 12:06

I had my DS 12 weeks ago. He weighed 10lb, he was on the top centile for his weight and off the chart for his length and head measurements. He's a big lad with a big dad and uncles on both sides!! At his 6 week check the 'lovely' Dr said his head measurement was too big and he needed a scan to make sure that there was 'nothing else in his head'!! Thankfully I'm not easily scared - he's had his head measured a few times and my DH & I have had to give the Dr our head measurements and height. She spent ages plotting everything and then told me nothing to worry about he's just a big boy!!!!!! Just what my Health Visitor and I have been trying to tell her all along!

kittypants · 17/05/2007 12:08

i hate this!my dd and ds1 were an still are tiny like me.i was constantly told there too small are they eating.ds2 takes after their dad is is bigger(not huge just bigger compared to them)but ofcourse now its because he eats too much and very worrying! cant win either way.

pucca · 17/05/2007 12:11

My ds is almost off the chart for weight and height.

He is 9 mths and 25lb and he actually had his 6-9 mth check a couple of weeks ago and HV didn't seem to have a prob with his weight.

missgriss · 17/05/2007 12:16

My DS was huge and I used to get comments from everyone about his weight - it drove me daft!!!!! He was 27lbs on his first birthday, but now he has just turned 2 he is 29lbs and has slimmed down at lot.

I would just ignore your HV it sounds as though you have a bonny healthy baby there

Ellbell · 17/05/2007 12:20

Ignore! If she's just started to walk she'll probably slim down a bit naturally as she burns off more calories by walking, but she sounds in proportion and lovely.

My sister was a fat blobby baby and didn't walk till she was 18 months... and has grown into a very slim adult (size 8 at 5'9" tall).
