I'm looking for positive stories

Has anyone survived badly injured nipple and managed to continue breastfeeding?

How long did nipple recovery take?

TheBlonde, well my nips are concrete evidence that what the nurse told you is not true . How unhelpful of her.

They are scarred and I'll never make Page 3 (shame) but they are whole, healed and no longer painful and ds has been exclusively fed breast milk for 25 weeks.

I just googled this and it was interesting, perhaps you've read it already> another part at the end talks about infected cracked nipples and using antibiotics - apparently they can do a swab to see if they are infected, here is the link

shonaspurtle · 11/05/2007 22:04

Yes, I had this. Taking the swab is important. I was lucky to be started on erythromycin as I'm allergic to penicillin but the doctor took a swab anyway. It came back that I had staph and also strep G infections on my sore nipple . If I'd been taking penicillin it would have had no effect.

If you feel that you have a persistent sore place then it really is worthwhile getting this checked. I also had antibiotic ointment to use and this made a massive difference to the healing time.

thats a useful piece morocco

I found this when I was reading the tips section this am - may be useful?

A vitamin supplement with Zinc in it can really help cure cracked nipples. I was recommended Berocca which did the trick.

TheBlonde · 15/05/2007 18:43

Sazzy - I'm taking a multivit which I assume has zinc in but I'll check

I think it is improving slightly and the latch is getting a bit better so it's hurting less
