Babyled Weaning

Hadders87 · 21/03/2018 20:12

My ds is 6months old and have started babyled weaning however ds still does not have teeth so has to gum everything.

He currently has baby porridge for breakfast and looking for alternative and I have no idea what to do for lunches or dinners as goes to get before we have dinner.

So far he has had broccoli, carrot (which he just spits back out), toast, and cucumber. Looking for what else I can give for snack and meals. Tia

Sweet potato was a firm favourite for my DD, sticks of peeled cucumber or any cooked veg, sliced strawberries, avocado, fish, boiled eggs? My best bit of advice would be to just let him play with it, if he eats a bit great, if not don’t worry. It’s not the end of the world if he misses meals, he’s still getting plenty of nutrition from his milk so it really is no biggy xx

The point of baby led weaning is that you don't have to prepare seperate food for them. My LO just has what I have for breakfast/lunch (we haven't started doing dinner yet) just cut theirs appropriately (finger length strips where possible)

This week breakfast has been boiled eggs and toast, omelette, crumpets, porridge, cheerios...I always add a fruit usually berries, kiwi or banana

Lunch has been caprese salad with tomato bread, spaghetti meatballs, chicken goujons with sweet potato mash, tomato avocado toast. I try to have a veg with lunch.

Hummus.. on toast fingers or rice crackers, almond butter (just almonds without any salt), you can make pancakes with one mashed bannana and egg then mixed (in a blender if poss) then cook, you could add bits of fruit to this too, avocado, mini shredded wheat soaked in milk, pasta mixed with tomato sauce (just tinned tomatos and garlic/herbs), dahls and rice are also one of my sons fave. I make them from scratch with lentils/beans and just dont add salt.

Also you can buy these fab baby ice lolly moulds on amazon made by nuby and i blend fruit (often tinned peach/mango/prune whatever) and freeze then they can hold them and eat. I guess you could try more exotic smoothies with greens in too!

The ice lolly moulds are great! I have made banana/avocado and banana/peanut butter so far.
As well as the great ideas above, you could do roasted root veg (eg carrot, parsnip, sweet potato), sliced avocado, fingers of melon or mango, porridge fingers, eggy bread.

What are porridge fingers creatureofthenight ? Im intrigued haha

Creatureofthenight · 24/03/2018 16:49

Ive seen them on Pinterest but not made them yet! You do equal parts porridge and milk, add fruit or purée if you want, leave it to soak a bit. Put in a flat bottomed dish and cook in the oven or microwave. Leave to harden and then cut into fingers.

Sorry to jump in but we are gonna start weaning this week our 5.5 month old (6months on the 7th April) we are gonna do puree and some BLW. How soon can we start offering things like toast and crumpets to suck on?

BellyBean · 25/03/2018 09:55

If you have dinner after LO is asleep, save a portion for an early dinner for them.
Crumpets etc are fine straight away, just be mindful of salt content.

Doje · 25/03/2018 10:06

Agree with @Chelle85, just put whatever you're eating in front of them. DS2 had fish pie as his first meal! Just be mindful of salt content when you're cooking.

For snacks, cooked sweet potato, cucumber sticks, sandwiches, bananas are all good to take out with you. I also made some savoury muffins for DS1 (didn't have the time for DS2)

Oh, and forget baby porridge, just use normal porridge oats! Other good breakfasts are toast, eggs, crumpets, avocado. And to be honest, in the early days I gave them dinner leftovers. Potatoes, chicken, quiche, carrots etc etc. They're not to know what's 'proper' for breakfast!
