Washable Vs disposable breastpads

I’m pregnant with DC2 and wondering about breastpads. I used disposables with DD but this time I’m looking into washables because the waste from disposables is terrible!. Looking at reviews a lot of people say the washables are rubbish and not very absorbant. Can anyone who has used both advise on a good brand to get? With DD I always thought my boobs never leaked as the pads always looked/felt clean and dry after wearing them all day, but the one occasion I forgot to put them in, I leaked badly! So I’m not sure if my boobs always leaked or it was just a one off coinciding with the fact I was at Baby Cafe surrounded by babies at the time of leakage (I had to walk a mile home with obviously soaking wet boobs in the middle of summer!)

Can anyone help please? :)

I used both disposable and washable ones - disposables with ds1 and ds2, and washables with ds3, and I can't say I found any difference between them. It is quite a while ago - ds3 turns 21 this year - but I certainly don't remember having any more problems with the absorbancy of the washable ones.

One word of advice - don't iron them! No, I didn't do this - it was dh. He thought they needed to be nice and flat, to make them comfortable, but all he succeeded in doing was melting off the waterproof backing. He is a domestic god, but on this occasion, his halo slipped a little! Grin

I used disposable with DC1 and washable with DC2. Much preferred the washable ones. I got the breathable bamboo ones - little lamb or something. They weren't cheap but so much nicer than the rustling disposables and better for the environment, very easy to just wash and reuse and no leak problems at all. I also felt like they were better for avoiding thrush as more breathable and when all else failed they could be whipped out to soak up toddler spillages too!

I used washables with DC£, as Markle says they are highly preferable to rustling disposables.

I had forgotten the brand, but little lamb sounds right. The bamboo is so soft and they have an inner waterproof layer to stop leaking through onto your clothes.

I didn't have any leakage didn't have any milk Sad but I used washable ones when applying nipple cream in the first few days to stop it getting on my bras and they were SO soft, just lovely. They were bamboo, possibly Little Lamb as pp mentioned. I had a look at the disposable ones someone had bought me but was glad I had the soft washable ones, even if they were only needed a handful of times.

Used both and found washable just as absorbent, I had some bamboo ones.

Isittimeforbed · 20/03/2018 14:44

I've used both and preferred disposable as I found they stayed in place better, I guess because of their shape and sticky strips on the back. No problems with absorbency though and I might have persevered if I'd leaked much but with both DC I haven't needed them after the first few weeks. I had little lambs too, don't get the black ones as even after washing loads they still left black fluff all over me and the baby!

Poppies9629 · 23/03/2018 18:22

I started on disposable and found them a little itchy round the edges sometimes. Have been using washable ones now for about 4 months and much prefer them (I do keep some disposable for when I have forgotten to do the washing and hate them if I have to use them).
I haven’t had any issues with leakage and I got all mine off eBay! xx

Jellybabie3 · 23/03/2018 18:25

Washable! Disposable are itchy and rustly. Plus they fold up into a shrivelled lump when you've been feeding due to the sticky back.....

PineappleScrunchie · 23/03/2018 18:29

I preferred washables to most disposable brands, but best of all for me were the lansinoh ones.

IMissGin · 23/03/2018 18:31

I used both and much preferred the disposable bamboo ones

I didn't know washables existed with dd1 Blush but joined the bandwagon for ds1. Despite scepticism (washables seemed so thin compared to j&j disposables and I, er, leaked a lot! Grin), the bamboo ones from Beaming Baby have been awesome and were soooooo much cheaper than other brands!

INeedNewShoes · 23/03/2018 18:45

I'm generally using bamboo washables but I do sometimes choose to use disposables if I'm going to be feeding in public as the adhesive and the fact they're less bulky means less messing around getting my bra cup out of the way to feed.

AlwaysOldBeforeMyTime · 23/03/2018 18:51

I got the cheapest/best reviewed reusable bamboo ones amazon sold and they were amazing! So much softer and no accidental turning around and gluing to your nipple 👍

Didn't notice any difference in absorbency, and I'm a leaker!

nightshade · 23/03/2018 20:22

I used both...moved to washable when nipples became uncomfortable which helped greatly..they most most definitely need changed more often though as I had an aggressive milk supply!!...

BurtTyrannosaurusMacklin · 23/03/2018 20:30

I wanted to try to be environmentally friendly, bought a load of washables (bamboo ones, some contoured some not, different brands) but they were awful for me! In tighter fitting tops they were clearly visible, they leaked regularly, and fell out of place and needed rearranging all the time, so I’m back on disposables now which are much more reliable and, importantly, not on display to the world all the time!

CinnamonTwist · 23/03/2018 20:56

I tried both. Washables were much softer on my sore nipples (I found disposables actually stuck and pulled skin off sometimes 😖) and cheaper in the long run. Round reusable ones do show in tight fitting clothes but if you can get flower shaped ones they are much more discreet!

milkjetmum · 23/03/2018 21:17

Disposables get my vote as I attribute the painful breast thrush I had to use of washables. Breast thrush was the worst thing! I did have huge oversupply so was always damp, but the problem went when using disposables and no issues with dd2 when I was fully disposables.

Bubblysqueak · 23/03/2018 21:19

I bought reusable but didn't really need them. They are great for removing make up, so soft on my skin!

Nousername2015 · 25/03/2018 16:48

I'm using washable ones from Asda, I love them! I've leaked a fair bit this time and they have never let me down, also no issue with them being visible under clothes.
