I have breastfed my daughter for 15 months now - i have lasted this long because she just wont take anything from a cup or a bottle (I have every type of cup you can name!!!) Because she doesnt take milk or water or diluted juice from a cup she gets constipated. I decided to stop breastfeeding her a few days ago and all I had was an upset daughter who kept grabbing my top to get at my chest. She was given cups all day with milk, water etc but hardly took any. I gave in so now she gets a feed at night before bed and thats it but she stil isnt taking anymore from cups - has anyone else had this problem with cups and if so what did they do? I should also add i have tried giving her bmilk in a cup and she still wont take it!!!!

Many Thanks

IMO this is a very very difficult age to try and finish b/feeding if your dd is still really into it, which she seems to be (some children just lose interest themselves).

Could you consider maybe continuing for a few months? IME it gets easier when they get nearer to two.

In the meantime I would just stick to "don't offer don't refuse", which is a gradual way of reducing the number of b/feeds.

I suppose you ahve to keep persevering with the cups.

Do you think she would be able to suck through a straw?

She migh find it a novelty? But can;t quite think whetehr she would be able to at 15 months.

Is she interested in what you are drinking? Would she drink from "Mummy's cup"?

Ways to get her to have more liquid in the meantime..jellies, fruit purees, soup?

You could be writing about my 14mth old DD there! I dropped one BF about 4 weeks ago and she wasn't too impressed however through trial and error we found that giving her milk at mealtimes was the most effective way of getting her to drink it (she isn't a good drinker). I use a cheapy spout cup from Tommy Tippee. I also ensure she gets lots of dairy foods and liquid foods such as cereals and purees etc.

i've been having loads of trouble with my 10 month old dd2 as i want her to just have 1 drink each day from something else. she finally took to a beaker i bought from asda, just a normal flip down one but the mouth part was quite big on it. she finally took a few sips after a lot of chomping on it but spat the milk out. i'm just going to try carrying on with this as this is the furthest we've got with her. maybe just destract her slowly with one drink a day, have you tried milkshake?

Or smoothies??

Hi

Thanks for all your replies. |I am definately doing the dont offer dont refuse and this seems to be working better than cold turkey. Its like she is hooked!!!! I have tried drinking the cup then giving it to her and it makes no difference but in the last few days I have seen a very slight improvement. I bought her a cup with a straw but her older cousin chewed the straw before using it!!! I give her milk at meals and its slight sips - never tried the jelly or smoothies so will try that from tomorrow. I make homemade soup which she loves it to bits and its quite watered down so she gets liquids. Thanks for the advice and support.
