Why does formula upset my ds?

I am bfing my 13 week old ds and have been trying to introduce a formula feed last thing at night. He takes it beautifully for the first 2 days and sleeps through the night. Then after a few days he seems to be in agony when i give him a bottle, and he becomes very fussy at the breast seeming to be in permanent discomfort. He has had very bad colic and has mild hidden reflux and has been seeing a co weekly for 8 weeks!!! I have tried changing formulas - SMA Gold, Aptimel, Nanny, Omneo Comfort - but they all produce the same results. Also tried every anti colic remedy in the book!!! If i stop giving him the formula he is fine again within a day - does anyone know why this is happening and will I ever be able to give him formula.

Iiwy I'd carry on with the bf. Why fix what aint broke?

Why do you want to give him formula, Janer1? He can stay on breastmilk for about six months, then have it alongside solids for as long as you want him to.

Some babies have a sensitive digestion.

If you want to give him formula when he is a bit older, you could try it again....but at 13 weeks, it seems a shame to put him through 'agony' unless there is a reason for it.....JMO, and of course there may be a reason!

maybe he has a cows milk intolerance or a soya one or both

mum2oliver · 04/08/2004 20:52

I suggest you go to your gp & demand to be refered to a pedatrician as an emergency.
My ds had probs for 17 weeks and was diagnosed with lots apart from reflux which is what it turned out to be (hidden). Go for it!!
Its your baby!! You need to find out what it is.Sorry I have little faith in the NHS.Im calming down now.Hope havent offended or worried.Good Luck.x

I'd go with no formula, maybe give him a break then try again in a few weeks, if he stillreacts badly treat it as a GP referral asap.

Clayhead · 04/08/2004 21:47

I agree with Piffle. I may be missing something but why stress out with emergency GP appointments when he's bf he's fine?

Thanks for all your comments. I have spoken to my hv who has never heard of this sort of problem, (she said he may be allergic to something) but i have decided to perservere and continue just bf him (i have had problems feeding him from birth and still struggle with it). I just wanted to know whether anyone else had experienced this so i had some sort of explanation. If i could understand why he does it i would stop worrying about it!!!

What are your struggles? Can anyone help with those?

Piffleoffagus · 08/08/2004 11:48

might be worth asking to see someone at a breastfeeding clinic or perhaps try la leche or NCT bf helpline to maybe see a counsellor etc to make sure you get the most out of breastfeeding, it should be a rewarding experience, not a fraught one...
Take care

Have tried all of these suggestions. bf counsellor checked out positioning and couldn't see a reason for him fussing. He will take a bottle of expressed milk but only seems to want to take about 2oz from the bottle before he starts crying and kicking around in discomfort. Am quite happy to continue bf him as he isn't always difficult and we are both starting to get the hang of it a bit better. He seems to gulp when he feeds and can be impossible to wind which i think is half the problem with him fussing, but this is not related to the formula problem!!!

Had the same with my ds, turned out he is intolerant to dairy and soya. Also is coeliac so cant have wheat or gluten, but its the milk that it is the main problem, worth getting him checked out. Good Luck

Are his nappies normal colour or not?

Janer1 · 08/08/2004 17:12

Yes nappies are normal colour - when he fills them that is, he only goes about every four days.

mmmm not sure then, sounds normal, maybe just colic. Formula can constipate them a bit.

My ds was pooing 7 times a day and it was green.
