Baby refusing breast

I have a 10 week old DD who I am mixed feeding. Predominantly bf during the day but a bottle of formula before bed or when DD refuses bf.

Most bfs are no problem but during afternoon and early evening feeds we are having problems. DD won't feed, she is trying to latch but is screaming and crying in pain and arching her back away from me. Sometimes she passes wind and the cries get worse.

I feed using the cradle hold, when she is upset I put her upright and she calms down but as soon as I lay her down to latch it starts again. I end up giving her a bottle which she takes no problem.

Any suggestions what I can try? We have tried Infacol and gripe water. We are using tommee tippee bottles and aptamil if that makes any difference.

I’d give one of the Bfing Helplines a call. Have you got the numbers? Smile

I never thought of that. I'm sure it's in all the paperwork the health visitor gave me. I'll try that. Thank you Smile

If she cries lying down but is better upright I'd be inclined to suggest wind/reflux. Try the rugby ball hold for a few feeds and keeping her upright (slings help) for 30 mins or so after a feed. Baby gaviscon might help if infacol hasnt.

This happened to me with my eldest! We tried to combination feed but he stared to refuse the breast but would take a bottle. I was told (went to a support group) that it was easier for him to get milk from bottle so he was refusing breast.
