I saw a mum in ikea last week struggling to breastfeed discreetly using a big cloth to cover herself....

baby was a teeny little newborn, and the lady was struggling in keeping her cloth over her and latch the baby onto the breast. i did consider going over to hold the cloth for her, but thought that would be overstepping the mark. it would wouldnt it?

I would have appreciated the support/sympathy

I'd hae been mortified that I was making a show of myself to get someone to come over.
Poor woman though and a lovely thought misdee

i would've have well, but am always wary of upsetting people.

i remember when breastfeeding dd3 i na sling, a lady came and tucked her bare feet up with the tail end of the sling, it was the middle of summer, so her feet werent freezing, but was a nice thing to do.

I'd have been relieved of the company and syumpathy.... mind you I'd have not bothered with the cloth and shot milk across the room .....

why was she in ikea with a newborn?

the thought of being in ikea at any time is traumatic, but postnatally?

our ikea has a baby feeding oasis. no need for cover ups if you're shy about feeding, you just go into the oasis and settle yourself in a comfy chair.

it was a fairly quiet time, just after the school run.

I would have welcomed any help offered when mine were newborns. What a kind thought misdee.

I would have welcomed it, but I guess some people might be offended or just generally on edge - you know what it's like hormones all over the place. I remember trying to feed under a poncho thing all the time, getting it all tangled trying to be discrete I know better now though

My ds1 was a month early and quite small and when I went for a check up at the hospital someone said 'oh hes tiny, I want mine to be small' and another woman said 'oh, but not that small'

Hmmmmm...........

If it had been me I would have appreciated the help I think, but if I'd been you I wouldn't have gone up for the same reasons as you did - would hate to make someone even more self-conscious.

I don't cover up when feeding in public but I'm still insanely self-conscious if I'm out on my own (better if I'm with a friend). Sometimes my mum's voice comes into my head though "nobody's looking at you" which I know is true really...

(that's what she used to say very loudly when I was struggling to get changed behind a towel as a teenager )

Ikea is a fab place to be with a baby IMO!

dd3 loves it in there. they have done one of the kids 'rooms' in fishy layout, 'FIIIIISH' she said, and leaped right in.

have to go back i na few weeks to get mroe boxes.

I was in a diner in Bristol today for lunch and it had a 'we support breastfeeding mums' sign in the window I think it is called Rockatillos or something similiar.
