8 month old deliberately biting while breastfeeding - pls help!

My daughter has started biting me HARD when breastfeeding over the past couple of days. I yelp, involuntarily, and then say 'no' sternly and wait a little bit before putting her back on but she just smiles, as though she finds the whole thing hilarious, and does it again! I really, really don't want to stop feeding her but it's agony and I am now terrified anytime her mouth goes anywhere near my boobs! Advice anyone, please??

It’s not deliberate because it hurts you, but possibly because she likes the reaction/feeling/etc etc.

I’d bet she’s teething. My son was dreadful for biting when teething. My daughter didn’t, it’s luck of the draw!

The best thing was anticipate the biting. For me, it was usually at the end of a feed while he was messing. So I just got my boob out ASAP once active feeding was done.

Good luck!!

I'm not sure at 8months she will understand being told no sternly Confused

Ouch! My little one did this too when she was teething about 8 months old. I'd tell her no (normally after a loud yelp - it is sooo painful isn't it!) take her off, sit her on the floor and that was the end of the feed. I got where I was scared to feed her! But thankfully it passed and I am still feeding her a couple of months later with no chomping! Good luck!

My baby did the same when he was teething - it’s agony but it’ll pass. Anbesol or bonjella on her gums before a feed might make her feel more comfortable and stop her biting. My son did laugh hysterically when I yelped Hmm. HV suggested same as pp, end the feed and put the baby down. Hope it gets easier!

Yep mine did this around 10 months when she was teething. If I said no she laughed. Instead I put her down away from me for a minute or 2 before feeding again and did this every time. I’m not sure whether that worked or whether her teeth stopped hurting but she gave up doing it pretty quick.

Thanks so much everyone! LittleMe03, no you're probably right, but I find it's my instinctive reaction to say 'no' because it's so painful and I want her to stop. I'm not shouting it or anything!

I don't think she is teething - no dribble, crankiness, biting on other things etc. I think she has just realised it gets a reaction and finds it amusing...!

It might sound counter instinctive but to break the latch when baby bits gently push head into boob and then put baby down.
Had 2 biters here!

Feeding time over if they bite, they soon learn. It's a phase
