Since moving to formula - screaming at night - wind? Help!

My little chap is 6 months old - I'm weaning him onto formula feeding. It's all gone very wrong.

He basically wakes at about 12.30 screaming - sounds like pain. I'll pick him up - get a couple of monster farts in between sobs, then he'll calm and be put-downable back in his cot with his dummy.I don't think he really goes back to deep sleep, though, cos he's up and down with the cry/fart routine the rest of the night.

I'm winding him until I'm blue in the face. Have given him a bit of solids to see if that helped, but not really. We're on SMA gold - which he's been having a bit of for a while without problems... but i wonder if i should try another brand.

Days he's pretty much fine - been a bit more tearful recently but nothing major.

Can anyone help? [very strung-out emoticon]

Hmmm, I know of plenty of people who've only discovered that their dc have a milk intolerance when they've switched to formula around 6 months. What's he like during the day? Does he get any sort of reaction if you put actual cows milk on his lips?

Winestein · 02/05/2007 08:50

In addition to what CantSleep says, formula sometimes just does this. SMA in particular is known to be fart-inducing. You could try switching brands to see if it makes a difference.

Do you have switch to formula, Villain? Could you not just continue to bf? Not criticising at all btw, just wondering if keeping things as they are would be better.

Villain · 02/05/2007 09:49

really? I hope not - poor little monkey.

What brand might be better? Aptamil? Nanny (the goat one)? Wysoy is extreme, isn;t it.

We've been dabbling in formula for a while, without problems, but we've stepped it up recently, and it's now the major part of the diet. Since then he's been hell at night - and OK in the day, but more prone to 'unexplained crying'/grumpiness.

I'll try the skin test today.

There's a long story behind it all - although at the moment the expression 'from the frying pan into the fire' comes to mind.

I am back-paddling a bit - but I do need him to have some formula.

[looks ruefully down at norks]

SMA gave my ds trapped wind when he was baby. Swopped to Cow and Gate and had no problems. Maybe try switching his formula.

chipmonkey · 02/05/2007 10:57

ds1 used to have Aptamil on occasion when he was little, he was fine with it. Ds2 used to get a rash when given normal formula, so I had to express like mad! He did seem OK when given Nanny though, but if you're in the UK I believe Nanny is to be taken off the market. It's still available here in Ireland though.

With formula the baby needs winding alot because they swollow air so easily with the bottle. How long do you give him on the bottle before winding? Mine is 6.5 months old and has been on the bottle since she was 5 days and i know that she needed winding constantly and it sounds to me like thats what it is and/or he maybe having too much milk and is getting belly ache. Just a thought.

Villain · 02/05/2007 12:28

i wind 2/3 of the way through - then again at the end. he gets angry if you take it away when he's busy!

Like gegs had problems with SMA and swtched to cow and gate and DD was alot better

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/05/2007 12:42

As someone else mentioned, you can't get goat formula in the UK any more. It's been illegal to sell it since November last year.

Wysoy is not only extreme, but advised against..

'The Department of Health and the British Dietetics Association advise against this because soy contains high levels of compounds called phytoestrogens that mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen and which could pose a risk to the long-term fertility of infants.

There is also a risk that babies who are allergic to cow's milk will also be allergic to soy milk, and sheep and goat's milk. '

You won't always get a reaction from putting cows milk on the lips of an intolerant child btw - if you do then you know there's an issue, if you don't you are none the wiser! (My dd is still intolerant at 15 months, but has never got a rash from contact with milk).

All, i'm in the same boat as Villian and need help! our boy is just over 6 months. i began weaning him last week. He is on week 2 weaning plan per Gina Ford - seems to be gonig ok. I've also moved from B/F to formula for 2 feeds (7am and 2pm)using Aptamil. The 6pm and 10pm feeds he has 7oz expressed breast milk. he seems to wake alot before 10pm does a few burps/farts and then we can put him down. but from 1am it seems to continue all through the night ranging from 1hr-2hr wakes. I'm wondering if its the Aptamil or over feeding! i don't give him any feeds during the night (which i was donig when he was b/f). the ironic thing is he is an angel through the day and rarely cries - he used to be alot more unsettled when he was exclusively breastfed. any advise?
