BFing Mums. Did you wear a nursing bra or not?

I'm 29 wks pregnant with first baby and not sure whether I need to buy nursing bras of if they are yet another product designed for parents/babies that we don't actually need. I'll be feeding at home and out and about and not sure? What do/did you do?

i'm using them, i just got a nursing vest from mothercare before i gave birth and went in to get measured after. was glad i waited as they had measured me at 39 wks and suggested one size, after my milk came in i was actually 2 sizes bigger than they suggested!

mrsmo · 04/05/2007 17:40

thanks everyone, great advice. Will wait, but will get proper nursing bras. Boobs are already massive so can't wait to see how big they end up!! Comedy breasts or what!!

I always wore a nursing bra. Even when dd was 10 months old and only got 1 feed a day I still wore a nursing bra. Bugger knows why!

booge · 06/05/2007 21:37

I've been wearing one for the last 7 months, I find normal bras too inconvenient.

I went into mothercare last week and they told me to wait until 2 weeks before EDD to get measured.

They are convenient, but do check you can undo the clips with one hand. I found the ones with thinner straps a bit trickier.

chocolatekimmy · 06/05/2007 21:48

They are so convenient, I still wear one most of the time now (10 months). My usual bra's are underwired so quite uncomfortable to manouver the boob out of the top (as well as less discreet).

Buy as late as possible or even after the birth as breasts do change size. You will find that they do as well in the first weeks/months so you may need to buy another after a while anyway

LandSmum · 06/05/2007 21:49

Def couldnt be without them. Makes feeding in public much easier than lifting a bra up. Marks and Spencers do a great pack of 2 (1 black, 1 white) for £25 which IMO is really worth it. I got measured bout 3 weeks before I was due and again about a month after dd2 was born and size ahdn't changed.

chipmonkey · 06/05/2007 22:14

I got some great ones in Boots years ago which had a little zipper on the side of the cup. They were very convenient while they lasted but the zips broke after a while.

I did until ds was about 1, or 1.5 or thereabouts I think

It was a huge relief to wear a decent bra again and helped me feel a lot less depressed about my new breast shape and size

at first I would definitely wear a WELL-FITTED and supportive one though, it will help avoid blocked ducts, mastitis and so on

FrannyandZooey · 06/05/2007 22:35

The Elle MacPherson Maternelle was the prettiest and most comfortable IMO, if you're interested

wait until as late as possible b4 due date deffo get measured i'd just buy one then go after baby is born and you can get out and about. i found i needed to wear one day and night for quite awhile so for night time i got a sloggi pull on style which was great to keep the breastpads in position and stretchy enough to flop boobs out to feed!! i got a bravado bra but although i liked the look and style of the bra it made my (large) boobs look a very weird shape so as soon as possible i was back in my underwired bras
my breasts are the same size now i've stopped feeding as they were before being pregnant

Jenkeywoo · 07/05/2007 00:07

DD is 13 months and I'm still in my nursing bras - she feeds quite a bit in the day and I can't see how I can do without it - I have tried wearing an ordinary bra but it just feels so uncomfortable and the underwire gets in the way. Am I the only one still wearing a nursing bra after 13 months!?

Ettenna · 07/05/2007 16:13

I'm just wearing normal non-underwired ones and hoik the cup done. i actually find fiddling with the clips on maternity bras a hassle.

laundrylover · 07/05/2007 16:28

No Jenkeywoo, I'm still in my nursing bra at 13 months too. I get black ones from Bravissimo (enormous hooters and a great fitting service in Manchester). I have worn an underwired a couple of times recently but found it very hard to feed in. Did bring my boobs up a couple of inches though!! That said my nursing bras give a good shape too.

BTW I have never leaked a drop in over two years of feeding and never used a breastpad just to give an alternative picture! I only ever have two nursing bras and wash them through in the bath. I would have more if I had smaller boobs I guess as they are cheaper and there is more variety.

littlethings · 08/05/2007 09:03

related question, now summer's here : anyone come across good nursing swimming cossies?

laundrylover · 08/05/2007 17:43

Didn't even know they existed TBH. I managed in a normal cossie by picking an out of the way sunbed and popping one out!
I reckon one of those tankinis, like they sell for pregnant peeps would be good. You can alway drape a towel/sarong over for sun protection too.

Wouldn't fancy feeding on the beach - a bit too gritty for my liking.
