Milk for new baby as previous children had cows milk allergy

So I’ve decided to formula feed my newborn this time again. Both my other children had cows milk allergy. They refused to give me hypoallergenic formula for my daughter and she still suffers bad eczema etc and with my son they finally had to when he broke out really bad. They give me Nutramigen for him at a few weeks old but it was a fight to get it. After about 4 days on the formula he was like a new baby and has had no problems since. Has anyone tried baby soy milk before? I really don’t want my baby to develop cows milk allergy this time.

No, soya milk is not a suitable substitute for babies under 6 months. It's not a given that he will have cows milk allergy so i would start with cows milk formula and see how they get on

You can buy nutrimagen yourself. It would be expensive but could be worth buying some so you can trial it and prove to the doctor that it improves any symptoms.

Soy is also an allergen. The dietician we saw said that half of babies with CMPA are also allergic/sensitive to soy. So I wouldn’t give soya based formula. Same with goat’s milk formula and other alternatives.

Of course if you were prepared to breastfeed and go on a dairy free diet, the breast milk would be free and easily available! But you must have your reasons for not wanting to breastfeed.

Unfortunately most babies who are allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy - my twins reacted badly to normal formula (eczema, explosive bums, bleeding nappy rash etc). Tried them on soy - fine for two days then one broke out in bright red hives during a bottle. Had to put them back on the normal stuff until they would sort out the hydrolysed script which took a further two months...

You know the signs - if it happens this time, go straight in early and fight for what you need!

I think you can cut all dairy out of your diet and breastfeed, can't you? I don't know a huge deal about it but for a short while, the health visitor thought DD might have CMPA and this is what she suggested.

There isn’t one I’m afraid. You can buy hydrolysed formula online, but it’s over £20 for a small tin. If they do have issues then as pp said it’s worth buying some to trial to show the gp it eases the symptoms

SMA do a formula in boots called sma ha. This is meant to be broken down to reduce allergic potential but isn’t totally cmp free
