Iron supplements when breastfeeding?

Does anyone know if it’s safe to take an iron supplement when bf? I asked the pharmacist who said they didn’t know (!) and then I asked La Leche League who said ask a pharmacist!

My DD only has one small feed a day now- and not even every day- juts before bed, so very little milk now anyway. I want to take Feroglobin which I think is 17mg of iron / day.

I assumed so as both myself last year and my sister this year were put on high doses of iron post birth for like two months because of blood loss in birth and anaemia and we both were exclusively breastfeeding newborns! Both babies seem fine so assume it's ok!

Spatone sachets are good, it says on the packets you can take whilst breastfeeding and you can take with orange juice. They don't clog you up like iron tablets do either.

I’m breastfeeding my 2 week old (or trying to) and was given iron supplements when I was discharged from hospital. They knew we were breastfeeding, so I assume it’s fine to take them.

There was an interesting discussion on iron supplements on inside health on radio 4 last week (I think). A study has found that more iron is absorbed when taking a lower dose every other day. I took spatone when pregnant & BF, mainly due to the prescribed dose making me feel really sick and upsetting my stomach. Turns out, there is no evidence to support the daily dose that's recommended by GPs.
