help! new mum with tongue tie baby, need some advice on whether to snip (ouch!)

I've just had 1st baby (12 days old) and noticed he has a tongue tie. MW confirmed it, but said they don't tend to snip them anymore and advised just to mention it to GP at his 6wk check.

But my friend who's a mw and breastfeeding counsellor said that actually it's probably better to get it snipped (and she could refer me to get it done) especially if I want to bf (which I am).

I've started to get cracked bleeding nipples on one side and both are very sore and bruised and both mw and bf counsellor said it was probably because of the tongue tie.

What should I do people? Any advice would be gratefully received. I understand it can also cause speech probs?

Eca that is good news! I do think if I said I had problems feeding the consultant would have seen us. However he did say to contact him again when ds was six months if he had a problem with lumps in food. Fortunately he has been ok so we just left it.

eca that's FANTASTIC news! I'm so glad you found a way to help DS. How are things going now a couple of days on? How are your nipples? I hope they're recovering well.

Please can you tell me who was the consultant so I can tell people (in rl) in future - you might have noticed I have a bee in my bonnet about this issue . You can CAT me if you don't want to post the name for some reason. Thankyou! (I would be interested to have someone 'CAT' me for the 1st time!)

hi nomoreTT's!

Sorry for the delay replying... Can you believe I now have flipping MASTITIS!!!!!!!! And have been in bed for a couple of days. I think there is some greater power against me breastfeeding!! AHHHHHHHH!! So I had about a day pain free and was trying to get the crack to heal and then on came the fluey symptoms and hard red boob Am on antibiotics and trying to feed through it. I DON'T WANT TO GIVE UP NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, the tongue tie... It has been noticably beeter since and I know what you mean about having a bee in your bonnet about it, I certainly have now.

Fraid I havn't worked out the whole cat thing yet but the consultant at N&N is Dr Minocha. His secretary is Penny Slaughter and I think he accepts referals from HV as well as lactation consultants and docs. He was LOVELY and very reassuring. Would highly recommend him

hi, eca, do you like in east anglia?

Has this been definitely conformed? My child was said to have tongue tie and we worried for months as he wasn't speaking. I took him to the GP and he doesn't. He could stick hjis tongue out which was a bit of a clue..

hi E&L- yeh, we like east anglia! I live over near kings lynn. And the in laws are over by ipswich

NAB3 - yes, the tt was confirmed by mw, lactation consultant, doc (although gp didn't recognise how severe it was) and specialist consultant (who said it was a more severe one he'd seen).

Millie had this(80% tie) and had hers snipped at 3 days old - they had run out of scissors, so she had to wait a day - in Southampton.

Small tip - if you go via consultant Mervyn, you pay £50, but my HV told me to contact the breast-feeding support specialist nurse based at Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton, who does a lot of the snipping. It was FREE, but she told me that if I had come via Mervyn, I would have had to pay the £50.

We were told by the paediatrician who examined him within hours of his birth (called it forked tongue so we thought it was something different to tongue tie) and then when talking to the HV when he was about 7 months old she said "Oh yes, tongue tie". I was really shocked and upset and worried so much as it was the first we knew as far as we were concerned.

For anyone near Southampton, bizarrely I was having a good clear out this afternoon, and came across the number for Andi Jackson @ the breastfeeding clinic (who did Millie's tongue-tie FREE)at Princess Anne Hospital.

The number is 07786267584 Mon-Fri 10am-1pm
