Baby still "headbanging" after feeds - why?

My DS is 13 weeks old and has been almost exclusively bf on demand since birth (and no formula for the past month). His growth has recently dropped - only put on 2oz in the past fortnight - and I know why that is: I had mastitis, took antibiotics for a week, they upset his stomach PLUS he started sleeping through. He is also slight build like his ma and pa. HV was nice and although she did mutter "thrive lines" she also said she wasn't too worried but bring him back in a week.

Anyway to finally get round to the point, although my rational head isn't worried, this episode has made me a little anxious that he isn't getting enough milk, despite feeding on demand. So I have been watching his cues more and I am bothered that even after a full feed and when he has pulled himself off the boob and had both sides a couple of times he will still headbutt me as though hungry. What's going on? Is he really still hungry or gearing up for another growth spurt or just a bit confused (often happens round bedtime).

Blimey that turned into a mammoth post!

are you burping him and putting him back on after?

SNOWBall4girlz · 28/04/2007 20:42

not too sure but if he is feeding alot maybe he is just wanting comfort after a feed ?
dont worry someone with great advice willbe along soon xx

Yes I have been burping him and also really trying to make sure he gets hindmilk - breast compression etc as he does tend to get a bit frustrated towards the end of a feed when the milk slows down.

if he is not crying, then i would say he is looking for comfort rather than food.

mine does this a lot - headbanging and stuff - although no other similarities with your experience - maybe some babies just do this?

kiskidee · 28/04/2007 23:14

mine did this. i think it is normal and natural. trust your body and trust your baby. is your baby otherwise content and alert and getting sufficient wet and pooey nappies? (they poo less now btw.) that is a better measure of whether a baby is thriving. not weighing every week and stressing out mums about it. just keep feeding your baby as you have.

when the milk slows down and you think he is getting upset offer the other side (even if he has had it already) i can remember doing that and walking around to distract me and the movement soothed dd.

I know, it's a bummer that just a little bit of a weight gain slowdown becomes stressful even though I KNOW he is ok. Wet and dirty nappies plus loads of smiles, giggles, chatting and cooing, looking at shiny things, feeling his hands and feet etc etc. Aww aren't babies ace!
