Breastfeeding vitamins

I'm feeding my 2 month old after having fed my 3 year old for 2.5 years.

Being on maternity leave for the second time I'm trying to cut back on unnecessary spending and it's hit me just how expensive the pregnacare breastfeeding support vitamins are.

Does anyone take just a normal multivitamin? I know the exact amount of vitamin and the ratios will vary but does it really matter that much? I'm thinking that it's all a marketing hype. I know that most vitamins are water soluble but I don't want to take a normal vitamin and then accidentally overdose my baby on a vitamin or mineral through my milk.

I’m just taking an Asda smartprice multivitamin. And even then it’s probably unnecessary considering how fresh and varied our diets are these days.

I got given vitamins from the council. The healthy start ones.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't think I can get the healthy start vitamins because DH earns too much for me to qualify but I'll have a google.

I think I might just buy some supermarket own brand and return the Pregnacare. I've been buying them for over four years if I include the conception and pregnancy ones. Even with the 3 for 2 offer that's always on I'm horrified at how much I've spent on them Shock

You might be able to get the healthy start ones for free op. When I had dd I got them in the first area I lived. They were supplied to anyone who asked and I know our household would not have been eligible if it was income-based. I was given a card I could show in participating chemists to collect them. However, we moved home in dd's first year and only the vitamin d drops for babies were given out by the council in the new area, so it may depend on where you live.

Oh although I've just remembered...I bought a load of cheap ones in Savers when I moved. They were basically the same ingredients as pregnacare but cost about a £1 a box. If there's a Savers near you definitely see if they still stock those.

My GP prescribed me pregnacare last time, but that was 3 yrs ago so might not happen now with cutbacks

Healthy starts in my area isn't based on income... I asked for them and the receptionist at the gps office gives them out

I am able to get healthy start vitamins from council mum and baby groups, and my health visitor gives them to me when I go to the baby clinic to get the baby weighed.

You can buy healthy start vitamins from the pharmacy. It's less than £2.
