9 month old suddenly refusing spoon feeding

He's almost 9 months and once weaning was established (a couple of rocky weeks) has eaten widely and lots. Suddenly over a few days hes becoming much more fussy and wants to just feed himself.

He is teething and yesterday and today is really uncomfortable so could this be the reason? Do babies suddenly become fussy?

I do give him finger foods in addition at breakfast and d

Oops too soon!
I give him finger foods in addition at breakfast and dinner but he is on the 91st centile, generally hungry and this alone won't fill him up.

Any tips for getting him back on spoon ? Thanks

Is the spoon hurting his mouth/gums or even just the sucking the food might be causing irritation?

Wakeuptortoise · 23/01/2018 20:13

Yes. Teething troubles. Have three or four spoons handy. Give him one for himself and try to sneak a few spoons in yourself. His mouth may be painful so don't push him too much. He'll be back to normal in a day or two.

One spoon for him to hold whilst you feed with another?
My dd is the same, very keen to feed herself so I push a spoon through a yoghurt lid so she can only get out a small amount and then leave her to it. I think it's just a sign of independence.

DD refused spoons from the word go so I wouldn't worry too much. Just let him crack on with finger foods it's really good for their fine motor skills. You will be surprised what they can actually eat as finger food (spag Bol, baked beans, stir fry, yoghurt alllllll possible Grin)

I think I started giving DD a teaspoon to play with while she was eating at around 9 months and at nearly a year old now she is able to feed herself a yoghurt from the pot with a spoon, perhps give him the spoon to hold and see what he thinks if it.

Thanks all. I'm really hoping it's just teething ...definitely happening at same time. I've given him a spoon which hes pleased with but he's just suddenly got his mouth clamped shut....sticks his tongue out now and then to see whats on offer!

Both mine rejected a spoon at that age so it was finger foods or embracing the mess!

They used to try feeding themselves with one spoon while i had a second spoon on the go! Neither ever went back to being fed by me.

When mine is teething, she only wants "easy" foods so things she doesn't need to chew. Baby cereal when she would normally manage adult cereal now, pouches (as they're very smooth in consistency) when she could normally chew some vegetables etc.
Otherwise, they do just get to a stage where they don't like you feeding them, and that's not related to teething and unfortunately not a short stage, in my experience!

Ahhhhhh! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for teething. He wantstobe like his big brother and sister. Thanks everyone
