Tender breasts

DD is 3 weeks old today and EBF. Her latch is pretty good now but one breast still has a bit of a lesion from when we were learning. Still using nipple shields until it's totally healed as it's still sore when latching on. My problem is though my breasts feel tender almost constantly, whether they are full or not. It hurts to the touch, especially the nipple but really a large area around it too. Is this normal?

As your baby I started still so young, I’d give one of the Bfing Helplines a call and speak to a BFC. Is there a local Bfing Support Group that you can get to as well?

I couldn’t bare to touch my nipples or the surrounding area in those early weeks, set my teeth on edge! Was bad enough having to latch baby on!
Lansinoh nipple cream totally saved me. I used it before and after every feed at first, then just after, and now (baby nearly 12 weeks old) I use it only once or twice a day, e.g. after a shower or before bed time.
It’s a bit more pricey than other creams but I really believe it’s the reason I never had cracked or bleeding nipples. Hope you’re feeling better soon Flowers

Thank you both. I'm using Lansinoh so nipples not cracked at the moment, just sore. When she latches on I have sometimes have shooting pains even though the latch looks good. I'm going to try to get along to our local bf group and HV coming tomorrow so will ask her. Fingers crossed, I really don't want to give up now!

Shooting pains can be a sign of thrush. Does she have any white patches on her mouth or tongue?

Allthecake · 22/01/2018 23:31

Gunpowder I think it's only when feeding (but to be fair she feeds so much it's difficult to tell). Thank you, I'll ask the hv tomorrow.

I used to get shooting pains as well, still do now when I get my milk let down before a feed, I think it can be normal sometimes x
