Help! 3 weeks of diarrhoea + GP who doesn’t understand BFing

My EBF 6mo has had diarrhoea for just over three weeks. At its worst it was 20+ dirty nappies a day. For the last 10 days we are down to 7-8 a day (still a lot more than the previous one a day or even every other day before diarrhoea started). The poo is green and sometimes frothy, sometimes mucusy -nothing like the normal brown. Obviously we are v worried about this!

She went to the GP last week for a stool sample which has come back clear. GP says it is likely to be secondary lactose intolerance, and that this means I must cut all dairy products out of my own diet so my baby can get better. This isn’t remotely correct from my understanding - breastmilk is full of lactose regardless of what I eat, surely?

GP also advised we should delay weaning onto solids until the diarrhoea resolves. But it’s showing no sign of improving further and my baby seems desperate to start solids - grabbing at food wherever possible. I’d be very grateful for any suggestions as to what might improve the diarrhoea, whether the lactose stuff is right, and if we should continue to delay solids.

GP has said we should go back for another appointment if no improvement by the end of the week. I’m a bit reluctant to though as I don’t really trust her to know what she’s talking about now!

Hi my DD is 15 weeks old and had 2.5 weeks of green poo over Christmas. There were probably about 10 per day at it's worst, and around 6 per day as it tailed off. She was also a bit irritable, but otherwise healthy and her normal self. Took her to the GP who sent us to A&E, but the doctors said she is fine. They said as long as weight gain is good and she is alert, healthy etc then she is ok. They said it could be CMPA or a virus that upset her stomach (although she didn't appear to have anything). We are now back on yellow poos, with the occasional green.

I am no expert, but have heard that too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk can cause frothy green nappies. Is she a snacker? If she's started to get distracted more when feeding and is on and off all the time maybe she is getting too much of the thinner foremilk?

Colief!! Thank you so much to the PPs who suggested Colief. It has worked a treat. Today we have had only 3 dirty nappies, and all normal brown colour - the first time since Boxing Day.

Clearly it WAS secondary lactose intolerance after all and the lactase in Colief has cleared it right up.

My only question now is: how long do we need to keep giving the Colief? As (a) it’s ruinously expensive, and (b) it’s a right old faff to administer if you’re breastfeeding.

Do you think the gut repairs faster with the Colief than if left to its own devices? I’m not sure I could cope with 4 weeks of this...

Can you get it on prescription?

RainbowTortoise · 18/01/2018 20:51

Have you tried giving her probiotics? I have not done much research but I believe it can help in the body's production of lactase, worth a try!

My baby had diarrhoea when he was a couple of months old and I was told a virus with diarrhoea can last up to three weeks by 2 separate GP's.
Don't know if it's relevant at all but just an idea. His only lasted 8 days in the end, but it's bloody horrible. I feel for you, whatever is causing it. Hope she's better soon Smile

Sorry, only just caught your last post OP. Ignore me! X

Oh crikey, this will involve persuading the GP that yes, it IS lactose intolerance despite my vegan diet. Could be interesting! Grin
