DS2 born on Tuesday had already lost 10.7% of birth weight yesterday. He's feeding constantly but his latch is shit. Pretty sure he has a tongue tie but won't be seen until next Tuesday. I'm so exhausted I really don't know what to do Sad. Last night and the night before he has literally fed all night. I am beyond exhausted. Don't know what to 🙁🙁🙁

Any advice??

How are you today haribo?

HariboFrenzy · 07/01/2018 19:57

Good news! DS has gained weight since Friday, so weight loss is now 9.6%. He's having yellow seedy nappies too, and wet nappies have some weight to them. So very positive! I'm still having him assessed for tongue tie but there's definitely been a huge improvement since my milk came in.

That's brilliant news hariboSmile

Hope everything continues well for you now xx

Those nappies are a good sign :)

He's literally been feeding since 7pm. Is this normal? He keeps falling asleep on the breast but then waking and rooting immediately. I'm so tired, I'm not sure I can keep doing this Sad

@HariboFrenzy really normal! Cluster feeding sounds like! My DD did this until about 8 weeks so it does get better 😊

AlbusPercival · 08/01/2018 07:31

Very normal.

After a few weeks you can introduce a dummy though.

Do you have sling? It is possible to feed in the sling and leave you hands free

underneaththeash · 08/01/2018 07:35

OP - hope you got a little bit of sleep?
Little babies do tend to cluster feed in the evenings (you need to have very low expectations of what you do in the evenings for the next few weeks and possibly buy a few a few box sets!), but they also like to suck and he may be using you as a bit of a dummy. Do you have a dummy?

I'd also second the occasional bottle of formula if you're struggling. Its honestly not poison.

He slept from 6am-7am. Now back on the breast. I understand about cluster feeding, but I think constant (and that isn't an exaggeration) feeding from 7pm-6am is not 'evening cluster feeding'

@Runningintgecold I completely agree about the addition of formula and just getting food into that baby, especially with combination feeding. I know 2 midwifes and new nurses (one of them my mother) who think this is best also to top a baby up with these patterns. Funnily enough I was looking for a friend last night on the NHS website about combination feeding as you can always just do one bottle of formula at night and breast feed all the rest of the time ect.

@HariboFrenzy you are doing so well as breast feeding is so hard sometimes, confusing, emotional, painful, everything! You should be really proud of yourself for doing such an exceptional job of caring, feeding and generally worrying about your little one. It will get easier I promise, just do whatever you need, formula, dummies, try not to worry about being judged on any of this as so many mums used these things out of not just necessity, but because it was better for a happy and healthier baby Smile

If it is that constant it may be due tomorrow tongue tie and he is feeding constantly in order to get enough calories. Is the assessment tomorrow? Some people say they see an instant improvement after its snipped so don't give up hope! We had a really rocky start with slow weight gain and we introduced formula, just one bottle in the evening given by DH,which just gave me enough time to have a shower and a bit of a break to save my sanity ! I think I would have given up otherwise but we are still going strong now at 3 months! Do what you feel is best and keeps you and baby happy Smile

Yes that is a long time.

Hopefully they will have done good suggestions tomorrow

In the meantime I have found the nct bf line very helpful
