How much money do you save by breastfeeding then?

mrsfirth · 23/04/2007 18:12

Obviously there are lots of reasons to b/feed (as there are to f/feed). A handy one is the saving of much needed cash.

I've now b/fed for 2.5 years, so can anyone give me an estimate of how much I have saved?

loads, sorry can't work it out as don't use formula!

however, the only breastpads that i liked cost about a fiver a pack and i needed them for months and months...

clairemagnolia · 23/04/2007 18:27

I would guess about £600 if that's two babies you're talking about, £300 for just the one as afaik you don't need to give formula after a year, maybe a bit less/more but I could be wrong as I'm also a breastfeeder.

Tassis, I got the washable ones which work out cheaper, and not scratchy.

UtterPigsty · 23/04/2007 18:27

idunno but i spent a fotune on lansinoh adn other crap. and hob nobs.

ScoobyDooooo · 23/04/2007 18:35

Well Formula is about £7-£8 a tub & you would probably get through one a week

I used washable breast pads when breast feeding so saved so mch money they were fab, brought them for £4.99 for a box of 3.

LucyJones · 23/04/2007 18:36

yep, formula £7 a week. That's the only additional expense as I had steriliser and bottles for b/f anyway. Breast pumps on the other hand can be costly. Also lanisoh at £9.99!

maveta · 23/04/2007 18:36

ScoobyDoooo - a box of 3? How does that work then?? Any recommendations?

ScoobyDooooo · 23/04/2007 18:37

Sorry i mean a box of 3 pairs.

ScoobyDooooo · 23/04/2007 18:38

So six breast pads, i brought them in mothercare i thought they were fab!

beansontoast · 23/04/2007 18:38

it would also depend on whether you would have hypothetically given cows milk or formula after twelve months?

but sod the money ...think of the grief it saved you

maveta · 23/04/2007 18:40

Ok LOL.. that makes more sense..

PinkTulips · 23/04/2007 18:42

i'm still on the same tube of lansinoh i got when dd was born

aqnd i use it for the nappy covers and everything!

saved fortunes by bf-ing, couldn't have afforded formula

ScoobyDooooo · 23/04/2007 18:43

here are there breast pads

tiredandgrumpy · 23/04/2007 18:44

Have often wondered this myself, although decided that I probably spent that saving in extra food for me (you know, nutrious super foods like chocolate ).

thequeenofcontradiction · 23/04/2007 18:56

I've spent about £50 on bras - although I hate them all and have now switched to normal tshirt bras which I just yank down.

Otherwise, I have bought some freezer storage bags and an Avent bottle (my mum bought the pump and steriliser).

I've never needed breast pads.

tassis · 23/04/2007 19:05

Those avent washable pads didn't sork for me -leaked right through them!

I've just started yanking down normal bras TQOC and it's really lovely to be in normal bras...why didn't I do this before?!

belgo · 23/04/2007 19:07

I think the money I saved on not buying formula, bottles etc was offset by the amount of chocolate and biscuits I consumed due to my incresed appetite.

this time i have probably spent more Bfing than i would have FFing, this is due to the major problems i had last time i thought this time i would get prepared for the worse and so far have bought;

Silverlon Pad £9.99
2 x Heavenly Breast Pads £6.99 (which have now been reduced GRRR!)
Booby Tubes £16.99 (i think)

things i prob would have bought new for summer anyway are...

Nursing bras £60 approx
Nursing tops £60 approx

shonaspurtle · 23/04/2007 23:29

Yep, cost was up there on my list of reasons to bf but I have spent an insane amount of money (those are gritted teeth btw).

When I was going through sore nip hell I bought everything and anything that might conceivably help. Oh and the bras and breastpads and pump yaddah yaddah yaddah

Mind you, it kind of acted as a mini-incentive to keep on plugging away...

Dimpled · 23/04/2007 23:32

Not just the money I am so lazy and the idea of bottles and shopping adn sterlizing and mixing and AARRGH!

determination · 23/04/2007 23:47

ITA dimpled

Busybean · 23/04/2007 23:55

roughly about £955 - 1100

fannyannie · 25/04/2007 16:04

I don't know where you lot buy your formula - or what brand - but when I was in Boots and Morrisons yesterday the price of formula was similar to when I fed DS2 about 2yrs ago - more like £5-6 a tub as opposed to £7-8!!!

Sterny · 26/04/2007 20:09

Ha, I was waiting for a thread like this to start as I was lying in bed the other day calculating how much I had spent on breastfeeding. Here goes:

2 bras for expressing £50
mini electric breastpump £50
hand breastpump £15
lansinoh £10
silverette £25
Nursing bras £50
Breastmilk storage bottles £20
Widgey cushion £15
Books on breastfeeding £30
New freezer to store all the ebm I expressed while ds was in special care £100

Fortunately was lent massive electric breastpump by the hospital for seven months free of charge, otherwise that would probably have set us back £50 a month for seven months: £350

Worth every penny imo. Now I know what I am doing plan to never go near a breastpump, cushion or read another book on breastfeeding ever again!

MadamePlatypus · 27/04/2007 20:40

I have still got the same bf bras that used for DS. Can't be bothered with pumping, so no real expense... except for my Starbucks cake habit. Hmm, I am the woman who didn't buy her daughter formula so that she could eat cake.
