Mastitis!!!

Been to the doctors this afternoon and just been prescribed Flucloxacillin for mastitis (1 four times a day for 10 days)
Started off with just a blocked duct this morning and then out of no where, body aches, shivering, sweating etc...
Couple of questions, how can I get it to budge! I’m in so much pain :(
Anyone had Flucloxacillin aswell? How did it effect your little ones?

Oh, I feel for you, I had it two weeks ago, and I was also on flucloxicillin. My breast was very tender and the fever and body aches were miserable.

I took very hot showers and held the shower head on the blockage while massaging as best I could, which at first was just walking my fingers on it. I also massaged during feeds, and made sure to feed off that boob A LOT. All this helped, but unfortunately it also just hurts a lot for a day or two, but you have to massage and feed through the pain.

My fever broke after about 36 hours on the medicine and things got much better after that. All in all, I felt back to normal on day 3.

I'm not sure how the medicine affected my Dd. I was on it for two weeks total because right before I got the mastitis I was on it for a different skin infection. During my time on it, Dd did have difficulty latching and started fighting and thrashing on the boob, but she also went through a growth spurt.

Hot showers and massage the breast towards the nipple. Also use a wide toothed comb (sounds mad I know!) from where the blockage is, and ‘comb’ the breast towards the nipple.

Try dangle-feeding baby, the gravity will help shift it. Babies are pretty good at getting blockages out, so feed as much as you can from the affected breast.

It took mine about a day to pass the worst stage, and got less hideous from there. I feel for you, it’s bloody horrible.

It didn't take long for Flucloxicillin to kick in to feel better but make sure you take the full course. I had mastitis 3 times in 6 weeks plus a strep infection and it all got too much as the abx were going straight through dc and wasnt putting on weight. In the end i ff i was so ill.

Wish me luck with dc2, im due at weekend.. Im going to give bf another go but i probably wont persist as much if im ill woth it again.

If you are dangle feeding have baby's chin closest to blockage.

Also my dh's firm hands helped clear blockages where i couldnt quite reach with my thumbs!!!!!

Had this with DS2 when he was 3 months - keep feeding!! Mastitis is hard to shift hence the hardcore antibiotics (something to do with blood flow in breast tissue according to a GP friend!).

If you start feeling worse again you should phone 101; the antibiotics weren't strong enough for me and I had to get IV antibiotics in A&E.

Luckily, it cleared up pretty quickly after that and DS2 is still breastfeeding at 19 months.
