Day 6 breastfeeding help!

My daughter was born 5 days ago (Sunday) and I have been bf-ing her. We've had our latch checked a few times and it's relatively comfortable although still sore with nipples bleeding occasionally. She was weighed today and had lost 7.5% of her birth weight which the midwife said was fine. Is it? It seems a lot to lose? She was jaundiced on day 3 but that's mainly gone now. She hasnt pooed since 10pm yesterday although plenty of wet nappies. I suppose I'm just looking for reassurance that that weight loss isn't too bad....

It’s fine :) Keep on feeding on demand and your baby will soon make it up!

Up to 8% loss by day 3 is normal i think. Anything more than 12% is of concern and may require intervention. My first lost 11% (also jaundiced) and we had a long and amazing bf journey...so basically you've done great, keep it up and they should start gaining 😁

Thank you both! It's so hard not knowing how much they are getting...

You don't need to worry about how much she's getting- as long as she's having wet nappies, she'll be fine. Once your supply is established, she'll start tanking up!

DS1 had to go under the lights with jaundice and was yellow for about 6 months, he also lost some weight at the start. I ended up breastfeeding him for three years.

Sounds like you are doing a great job, well done, it's not easy is it. Yes can be unnerving not knowing how much they are taking but it gets easier to trust the nappy output.

My baby was slow to get back to birth weight and I was really rattled but I started waking baby to offer breast every 2 hours in the day (of baby didn't cue before that) and feeding that often helped get the weight back on and then growing steadily bang on centile.

Good luck!
